I'm a senior, so I've been through my fair share of professors. This semester... ugh. I got three test results back this week, and I could not be more ****ed. Engineering major, by the way.

Class 1: Teacher says average is 40% on the test. Does not curve it. At least I am above the average, but I still did awful. I'm less worried about this since I don't think he is going to fail most of the class.

Class 2: I got an 84 on a test. I got all the concept "math" questions correct with -3 due to carless errors. I get a nice -13 off because I didn't answer an open ended question to the TA's standards. I feel like it was a "You did well, but I need to find a way to deduct points" question.

I emailed my professor about this last Thursday questioning what the correct answer would have been, since I think I was right. I got not response. Tomorrow I feel like I am going to go to his office hours and rant.
(84 Wahhh… ccer mentality lol)

Class 3: TA grades the exams. I ADD additional information to question 1, and my additional information is correct anyway. I get zero for the question. I forget to multiply 2X2 in a question and put 2. I get a zero on the question. I forgot to carry my square root over in the answer (tough it is shown in the previous equation). I get a zero on the question.

My grade on that exam: SAI#$%#FHAW($RTWA@$@#$@DNAWLI

NO ****ing partial credit whatsoever. I find this completely hypocritical since the teacher makes mistakes every class that we correct him on. Tomorrow when I go to his office hours I feel like if he does not give me credit back I will RAGE.

Did your syllabus say you should get partial credit? If not, then you really have nothing to support your argument. If it does say that you should receive partial credit, bring it with you to your teacher and show him/her.

He said the answer either right or wrong.
I am still going to him to rant. I don’t see the point of neatly writing out all my steps if the teacher doesn’t recognize it. I feel like the point of a test is to show that I know the material. I’m not perfect, and neither is the teacher.
The main thing that ****es me off is question one, which I did get correct.

Then it is a good idea to express your concern, just do not be so aggressive about it when you talk to your teacher. Raging at him probably will not give you the reaction you want from him.

^So I won’t have a supervisor or someone checking over my work when I first enter the real world? I know what your saying, but come on…

Some of you (cc in general) are horrible at comforting people. I was venting.

Also, let it just be known that I was exaggerating when I said “rage.” I do know how to handle the situation. Just blowing some steam off on the internets. Thanks anyway.

You may indeed have a supervisor checking your work…but he or she will not be pleased to be finding lots of mistakes due to inattention. If you are asked to run calculations on which advice is to be given or a decision is to be made they had better be right. Make a few stupid mistakes and your real world employer will replace you with someone who doesn’t .

I recently had a class where there was something wrong in the book, and a homework question based off of it. After the homework was due and they graded it, they sent out an email saying something along the lines of “So almost all of you got this wrong because you did what was in the textbook. The textbook is wrong, what you’re actually supposed to do is this…” Woulda been nice if they told us before the homework was due.

I have another class where we just got an exam back, the grading seemed about as random as you could get. Points lost for correct answers (no explanation as to why), one question (out of 5) was simply not graded and everyone got full points for it, regardless what they wrote. Then after that a seemingly random number of points were added to everybody’s exam (from what I’ve heard, everyone got somewhere between 4 and 17 points added) with no explanation as to why or how it was decided who got how many points. Just seemingly random. Just based on what they said the average was and what I got, I’m guessing I got a slightly better than average deal on this weird random grading so whatever, but it’s still pretty insane.

Not much of a rant so much as an annoyance, but I don’t like the approach my calculus TA this quarter takes towards leading discussion. He just repeats exactly what the professor said during lecture, even using the same examples, and does a worse job at clarifying anything when questions come up. And we have to stay because there’s discussion quizzes. Uggggh.

And while I’m at it, I don’t like Tuesday/Thursday classes in general because they’re 80 minutes as opposed to 50 minute Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes. I have trouble sitting for that long continuously due to issues with my leg, and after about 40-50 minutes you can tell the professor doesn’t want to be lecturing for the entire time. I like my TR class this quarter and all, just wish it was a bit shorter. The professor even mentioned yesterday that she hates Tuesday/Thursday classes because they’re too long for everyone involved. Plus on Tuesdays I have the dreaded calculus discussion after that class.

Other than that, no issues with professors or TAs yet (knock on wood).
