Hey so i wanted to take government and economics on florida virtual school this summer. Any feedback if these classes are easy? And mention any other easy flvs classes youve taken

This is from a parent’s point of view – DS took FLVS, Dual Enrollment, and regular high school courses all at the same time and had both these courses as a 10th grader (honors versions - which just means you have a few extra assignments so it’s worth the grade boost). They are typical FLVS classes with lots of busy work/assignments/projects, but they were easy enough and you can keep submitting assignments to get better grades. His government teacher worked with him (and 20 other students) to finish the class in 3 weeks. That was a lot of work, but then he was free the rest of the semester. My DD will take the same classes next year in 10th.

They have also taken Alg1 honors and Chinese 1 & 2 on FLVS. Chinese 1 was easy, but they hate Chinese 2 (teacher is super nice and assignments are pretty easy but tests are impossible with all Chinese characters and they need the teacher’s help to translate hundreds of characters). A friend took driver’s ed (super easy and short) and Computing for College and Careers (super easy but lots of assignments and easy to get behind). DS is going to take Physics honors and another easy elective (not yet decided) at FLVS next year while he is taking Dual Enrollment, all because you can work fast or slow at FLVS depending on how your other classes are going.

All in all, both kids think FLVS is an easier way to take classes because you can pace yourself around whatever else you might need to do. You can even take a 2 week vacation from FLVS during finals week for your other classes. It’s best just to set up a pace schedule and make sure you have turned everything in according to your schedule by the end of the week. You should have no problem finishing these courses over the summer.

I think having a book would have made it easier to study for tests. You may find it helpful to cut/paste and save all the text from the lessons to use as a review for the tests/exams. Although most teachers have reviews for you on their announcements page.

Good luck.

I can not begin to describe how much I hate FLVS and several of my peers also agree to this statement.
I’ve actually taken American gov on Flvs and the main idea is you really have to pace yourself and be determined to complete the course but if you know your going to have a busy schedule during the summer I fully advise you do not take the course.
Flvs requires you to turn in 3-4 assignments per week, granted, the first 2 or 3 weeks of the class will have pretty easy assignments but as you progress you will have harder assignments such as doing the required collaboration assignment, writing docent scripts and other meaningless tasks. Another requirement of the class is having oral quizzes over the phone and monthly check up calls which can become a pain in the butt.
All of my peers that have taken American gov on FLVS took them longer than the 18 week time frame the course is supposed to take.

Just a hint: If you don’t keep up with the pace & turn in the required assignments on a regular basis the teacher has the authority to block your access into the course and you will have to call the teacher in order to regain access however if you don’t call your teacher to receive access again they can drop you out of the course with an F.
The one positive thing I can say about Flvs is that I did learn some new information a lot of it was review for me since I had taken US American history the year before.
As long as you have a lot of free time in your schedule & you really are going to work hard for those two classes go for it. If you just want the American Gov and Economics credit out of the way & don’t particularly care about learning the material just take it on Plato Learning, I can guarantee that you will be finished with both of those classes in a week or less.
I’m not even sure how someone finished the course in 3 wks with all those meaningless projects, notes and special assignments like finding a person who has been a victim of a natural disaster & interviewing them or sitting in on a real life political experience for 2 hrs like a school board meeting & making a fake blog about it then faxing over a signed form as proof you actually did it!

I took AP Macro and Micro economics on FLVS this past year and it was a generally positive experience. You do have to be diligent about pacing yourself. The one thing that I felt that it lacked compared to a traditional classroom setting was inter-student interaction, it’s essentially nonexistant outside of periodic webinars, and I missed that.

I took American Gov’t on FLVS when I was a freshman and I quite enjoyed it. My teacher seemed like she was always doing something else, so she didn’t really care much and she wasn’t too involved/concerned with hounding the students (or at least me) all the time. This didn’t bother me because I’m fairly independent and preferred to just do everything on my own without ever having to speak to the teacher. I don’t recall the workload being too much, I was able to get through at a comfortable pace.

The other classes I took (Web 1 and Web 2) weren’t as great experiences. They were so basic and unchallenging, and the teacher was annoying. I had no motivation to go and do any assignments, so I had to endure a teacher who called about three times per week.

Really, it all depends on your teacher. It’s a worthwhile route though, because you actually can learn from it you’re into it, but you can work at a faster (or slower) pace that suits your learning style.

hey 10nisman94 can you give me more info about AP macro through FLVS? I was going to take it through there… did you do the AP tests for them yet? and if you did, how did you do and did FLVS do a good job in teaching it to you? And if not…any other places that you found to take it?

FLVS will be adding AP World History and AP Human Geography for Summer '11 signups.

^Really? How do you know?

NEVER EVER EVER choose FLVS. the instructors have an awful personality. Specially MAY HUANG from chinese segment I.
