rate my chances for NU?

<p>Sorry, another rate my chances topics. Can you tell me if I have a decent chance for NU? (I'm really interested in their accel. med program...)</p>

<p>I'll try to be quick:</p>

<p>Junior, Asian Male from California
SAT I: 2230 (740 M, 740 CR, 750 W)
Rank: 5% percentile
GPA: about 3.9 UW, 4.7 W</p>

<p>SAT II:
Bio-M: 760
Will take IIC and Literature and expect 750+ on both.</p>

<p>2 years of Journalism, 3 years of Spanish, 4 consecutive years of Math, Science, History, and English, all honors/AP</p>

<p>Top 5 ECs:
1) Photo Editor of School Newspaper
2) Treasurer of Art Club
3) Public Relations Officer of Go Club
4) Concertmaster at local youth orchestra
5) 4 years JV swimming</p>

<p>Top 5 Awards:
1) Member of California's first ranked HS Go Team
2) 2nd place, SF Chronicle's "American Dream" Essay contest
3) "Coaches' Award"-Water Polo
4) Superior Command Performance-CMEA</p>

<p>Community Service (100+ Hours)
1) Prayer Minister at Faith-based Clinic
2) Caravana Mexicana
3) Elementary School Tutor
4) Relay-for-Life Runner</p>

<p>Working as a Receptionist at Local Tutoring Academy to cover costs for Swimming.
Part-time Tutor for HS Sophmores covers cost for HS Prom, Dances, etc.</p>

<p>Will get awesome recs from Precalc and English Teacher.</p>

<p>I'm planning to retake the SATI and get a 800 in the math and writing sections respectively.</p>

<p>Would this app be good enough?</p>

<p>Honestly... this is so silly! Read the NU FAQ or get any kind of college guide and look at NU's standards. If you're in their range, you have a chance of getting in. I would say you have a good chance, but I have to question your intelligence if:</p>

<p>1) You posted four awards under "top 5"
2) You honestly didn't think you even had a good chance of getting in with grades, ECs, and an URM hook like yours. Sheesh!</p>

<p>Sorry if this sounds harsh, but this is ridiculous. NU is not an impossible school to get into, but there is never any way to tell with any good school. Of all the great things this community offers, it seems dumb to me that people want to use it to find out their chances when there really is no reason for that :(</p>

<p>yeah, this is ridiculous. Ill tell you that you have a good chance of getting in, but only if you also let me tell you to get a life, and that you are turning CC into some strange circle-jerk. We get it, your smart, you dont need to be here.</p>

<p>i think you guys were pretty harsh on him. He wants to apply to HPME which is extremely competitive. There are people choosing NU over Harvard and Stanford to go there so i don't think he's just being a jerk. If you took time to read more carefully maybe you would have seen that. Bad news is that I don't think that he will get into HPME. I have enough friends who have even better stats than his who didn't even get an interview (you have to send in your stats, SATs, GPA, SAT IIs, on a card to see if your worthy of an application and then maybe you get interviewed). It is unlikely that a school with a top 20 med program would have a 7 year med program so the ones that do, like Rice or WashU are very competitive. For the amount of posts and knowledge of NU that you have, TheCity I'm surprised you didn't catch up on that.</p>

<p>why would you want to base your confidence or chances of getting into a school on the opinions of people who don't even know you? What if someone was to say that he has no chance in hell of getting in? It's not our opinions that count, it's the admissions peoples'. I don't see anything wrong with asking questions such as, "what does NU or HPME look for in a student?", but I do think it's ridiculous to ask about chances because that's so suggestive and well qualified students get turned down from competitive schools every year.</p>

<p>I think he has a decent chance at NU and at getting into HPME. I'm 100% certain that he'll get an application after filling out the card (send it as soon as you can, like Aug or Sept). All that's left are the essays and recs, etc. You really have to sell yourself creatively. Be honest and let them know why you wanna be a doc. I think half the battle is being memorable and having passion. Maybe i'm being idealistic, I dunno. Good Luck though! I'm rooting for you. =)</p>

<p>I see what you're saying, Legopan, and I know how competitive it is, but that doesn't change the fact that our opinions mean nothing when it comes to the decision process. WIth good schools, really anything is possible. I had people with worse stats than him luck out, and people with amazing stats get rejected everywhere. We really shouldn't affect where students apply, and they really shouldn't need to know what we think. They should just apply where they want and see what happens.</p>

<p>Edit: I pretty much agree with Lunknot. It's a little weird though because really, no good can come from something like this. I'm rooting for everyone too, but if we all say we think he'll get in and he doesn't, that would suck. Likewise, we might say he won't, and he will get scared out of applying when he should apply. In the best case scenario, we end up being right, and the whole thing is inconsequential. Which is why these "rate my chances" posts suck :-P</p>
