And one more thing....I am really undecided on whether to apply to UPenn ed or harvard. They are both great schools. I want to go to a school where i will get good academics and a place where i can still do comedy and piano. My dad went to UPenn and Yale for med school. But i dont think yale counts because he just worked in the hospital. Penn counts and the info lady at our school said that i get a special interview on campus and stuff which will help me get in. What do u think the difference is between penn music school and harvard music school. Also, one thing i was considering was applying to harvard for grad school. I want to do business and going to penn or harvard is a tough decision because both have good business schools. One reason i want to go to harvard is because i will get a good taste of both schools and it will give a change in taste. How would this decision affect my admissions (applying to penn ed)?

Well, if you apply ED to UPenn, and you make it, you must go there even if you are accepted at Harvard RD (you can't apply both places ED). As for UPenn music school, I never knew they had one. However, it is UPenn, and just for that you know that it must be a quality institution-not necessarily like Harvard, but definitely a quality music school. As for the business situation, both schools are excellent. Applying to either one will ofer you opportunities to keep playing piano and doing your comedy just because of the kinds of institutions they are. Undoubtedly, both schools have comedy clubs in place which you could definitely benefit from. If you have a legacy at UPenn that only increases chances of being accepted, so I'd say go for it. Another school you may want to consider if either one of those schools doesn't work out, is Cornell. It's a great school with excellent arts programs (including a comedy club), and they also have a business school (a darn good one at that). I want to go to Cornell because they are the only Ivy League college with the major i want (Policy Analysis and Management). As for sending in a cd- Go for it!! you can request during admissions that your tape be critiqued by a music professor (you can do this at Cornell as well, even if you do not intend on going there; you can send in a tape with an application to be critiqued by their music staff-although that would be a lot of work just to get a tape critiqued). I would imagine that Harvard and UPenn would do the same, but I would just ask and see what they say. And if you are just looking for an opinion and they refuse the request during admissions, you can also send a tape on your own time to their music professors and ask they to critique you. I am sure they would do it without a problem. Let me know how things go. my email is blackferrari2006@yahoo.com

holy crap youre from andover??? i moved from bloomfield hills to RI in 7th grade, i would be a senior there had i been there, sweet man

you know some seniors, like maybe cyrus rabbani or gaal surugeon or someone?

seriously, just chill...focus on your classes and studying for the SAT's...that's what's killing me right now, but anyways, why are you worrying about college so much right now? you'll get in somewhere, and thats all you need to know as a junior...relax

harvard doesn't offer a business major.

as for your music selections that you're sending in, do you have anything more substantial? I'm playing Chopin's 4th etude (Torrent) now but I would never send that it...it's jsut not a good enough representation of how good you are. I'll probably send in one of my old cd's, from 8th grade with Chopin Sonata in B flat (1st mvm't), Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (2nd and 3rd mvm't), some Bach prelude and fugue, and Ginastera's Argentinean Dances. I'll probably add some more recent pieces on the assumption that I have improved, like Saint Saens Concerto no. 2, Brahms Rhapsody no. 2, and Scriabin Polonaise. And do the little competitions, they'll definitely help.

ok thanks...im a junior now an ill be done with the chopin etude in like a month. I have lots of time to learn other pieces and the chopin etude was just one consideration. Ill probablly learn much harder pieces by senior year and cd time.

Jarahul.. i know both cyrus and gaal.

amit- i have heard u play and u suck, no offense

I like Chopin's 4th etude... whats wrong with it? Out of all of Chopin's etudes, I lonly like the Revolutionary etude and maybe the Butterfly etude better.

no offense guys but those pieces are very easy...if a music prof. at harvard heard you play them, the recording would have to be impeccable or else they'd toss it out and tell the admissions officers that you are nothing special

what kind of pieces would u say are considered "hard" by the music prof.? Can u give any examples?

Harvard reject ppl with perfect score, i think once ur score is above 1450, the process is totally random :( sorry!

lol thanks!

Justice: which pieces are easy? a music professor at Brandeis has heard my old CD and has said that it was really good. anybody can learn a ridiculously hard piece, its just reading. quality is the key.

tetrahedr0n: nothing's wrong with Chopin's 4th etude...it's just not a substantial enough piece for it to be half of his recording. but revolutionary is amazing, only thing is that it's over played. i think "tristesse" is one of my favorite too, bonus for you tennispro xP

I like the revolutionary but i agree, everyone plays it. Its the perfect piece for the average piano player who has been playing for 10 years. I would actualy like to learn before i send in my cd (im a junior now) a lizst hungarian rhapsody or the 3rd rachmaninoff prelude in b minor (the really fast one!). But these are difficult pieces. Has anyone here learned the rachmaninoff piano concerto 3 and is sending in a recording of it? Thats an amazing piece and if someone can give a decently good preformance of that, i think they will get in!

wow man, u know both of em! did u go to west hills, maybe i remember u

i was mad buddies with cyrus and gaal back when i lived there

lots of my friends are playing rach 3rd, that's overplayed too xD im doing prokofiev's 1st now. which hungarian rhapsody?

Im thinking of playing the 2nd or 6th. How can so many ppl play rach 3?!!! I thought it was incredibly hard to play...according to other ppl ive heard from! Are the rhapsodies considered to be hard compared to the rach 3?
