jarahul- i went to country day for middle school

nah, the rhapsodies are easier than rach 3. it's overplayed b/c its so hard so when any good pianists wants to prove themself, they choose to play rach 3. its an amazing piece, really. it also gets butchered in the hands of some pianists though, thats smth to be aware of

oh ok...can u play the rach 3, azngirl?

ohhh ok nevermind, then i won't remember you. Still quite eerie though, that this random dude on the harvard site goes to my former future high school with old buddies o'mine

yea...do u know howie migdal?

Prokofiev rocks! I've been playing/performing a Prokofiev concerto myself!

rach 3 is way overplayed, but its still a great piece. amusingly, at the last van cliburn competition, 5 out of 6 pianists chose it as their big concerto in the final round.

lilpinkeyed lamb - which one? i really like prokofiev's 3d

on the topic of prokofiev, does anyone know/play the 6th and 7th sonatas (the stalingrad ones)?

Ive never really listened to prokofiev's sonatas....im not as familiar with prokofiev....I am very familiar with all of the romantic composers all the way up to rachmaninoff and scriabin and a little shostakovich who is modern...im pretty familiar with beethoven as well

yeah man, i knew howie. havent talked to any of those guys in years though, cyrus occassionally, but yeah. i def remember howie and all the gang

this is soo weird! lol

I've been playing the whole 3rd concerto...and i've also played prokofiev sonata no.3 and 7...

i love the 3rd! it's so amazing...haha, i first heard it during one of my competitions. the guy won~

lilpinkeyedlamb

How hard is the rach 3? How long does it take to learn? And what makes it so hard?

prokofiev is WEIRD

i have great respect for anyone who can listen to his music and enjoy it, much less play more than one piece. my russian piano teacher made me play a prokofiev and i refused to play another one

about common pieces...i guess the word isn't easy. do chopin/debussy/etc, but choose one of the uncommon ones as opposed to the ones that everyone does (unless you are exceptionally sick at piano; then do whatever you want and don't listen to me). i use the words easy and common interchangeably, which is wrong to do.

i hated prokofiev at first...when i played my first sonata (#3), i hated playing it at first...but i started to like it...and then love it...

prokofiev rules!

rach 3 has a lot of notes...and takes time to learn...and is WAY overrated...
i went to a keyboard festival this summer and witnessed about 10 trillion people struggling with the piece...

oh ok....what kinds of pieces do u recommend i play? Im looking at pieces that are pretty difficult (not like the rach 3 tho!) in the eyes of the adcoms but not overly difficult. I want to do a good job on a difficult piece.

yes, prokofiev takes lots of gettng used to. i played quarrel first, which is fun after you learn it. now its the concerto xD

justice: who's your teacher? do you know jaekyo han, or luis ortiz?

do you like liszt? his pieces are really impressive to listen to, and it's possible to learn liszt really quickly and get away with it. maybe a short liszt piece? a liszt etude?

Oh, another great flashy piece is the Wild transcription of Gerswhin's "I Got Rhythm"...took me a week to learn (and i'm not a great sight reader) and sounds really impressive. judges in competitions love it, and i'm sure the adcoms will too!

tetrahedron-

what school do u go to? U live in michigan...do u go to andover in michigan?
