I'm applying to both Cornell and UT Austin for the Spring 2012 semester. I know I can get into UT, im just curious about Cornell. I'm taking some advanced math classes this summer/fall so I'll decide then if I want to major in Comp science or a major with less math like philosophy.

Awful High School stats:
-3.1
-1610 sat
-houston debate champion, editor in chief of newspaper

My college stats:
-Sophomore
-3.95 GPA at mediocre state school (University of Houston) but I am in the honors college here
-I am an URM hispanic
-Lots of ECS: debate, student government, internship with a corporation, student programming, student film maker, etc
-Lots of volunteer work: debate mentor for low income schools, latino art center, speaker for low income schools, probably will do more this semester
-I can get a good letter of rec
-I am a good writer so I am sure I could pull off a good essay if I try

taking advanced classes doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get in for sure, you have to do well in them of course. if you’re not doing so hot in advanced classes, take the regular ones. i’m nto sure about your university, but mines has calc 1-4 which is the normal calculus classes. we also have the advanced calculus classes which is calc 1-3. i’d rather do well in calc 1-4 and have a better gpa than go hardcore and do calc 1-3 at a advanced pace. just keep that in mind, i’m a engineering major and i could’ve taken that 1-3 route, but decided to do the 1-4 route because i don’t want to have too much pressure since i’m taking physics and engineering classes as well.

i think you should be fine as long as you have a 3.5+ for cornell, but it’s a pain because you will need to make copies of your catalog and send it to them giving them the descriptions of every single course you have taken. they’re VERY picky with transferring credits. good luck.

You really think a 3.5+ for Cornell is solid? I thought so too, but its Cornell so you never know. Mind commenting on my thread about the same thing? By the way OP, I think your GPA and ECs are great, don’t think there is anything else you can do but kill your essays and get solid recs. Best of luck!

I think you’re in. I applied and I got in. I’m not even in the honors college and I got accepted and I go to a cc. My hs gpa was more than a 3.5+ though. I think essays and extracurriculars play a huge part. I think the minority status helps? I am one.

Yes, they do accept spring transfers. Human College of Ecology and CALS are easier to get into than the other colleges at Cornell. I particularly chose CALS because it pertains to what I want to with my career. It would’ve been stupid of me to choose CAS. CAS is harder to get into by the way. Good luck

Hey everyone, not to get too far off base but I’m applying to the school of ILR for admittance in the spring of 2012. I would be applying for fall 2011 but I’m still in Afghanistan at the moment and will be until the end of September. Could anyone take a look and let me know what my odds are looking like for transfer? My admissions councilor says I’m a strong candidate but I’d like to hear from people who have already applied.

I spent 1.5 years studying at the United States Military Academy at West Point

I had a 3.4 GPA there doing 20-22 credits a semester, plus NCAA D1 fighting, plus thesis work outside of class and serving as a TA (My grades were all A’s and B’s, no C’s)

I won the Annual Student Mathematics award in a class of 1200+

SAT’s were about 1350-1380 (old score)

I have Shining recommendations from 4 professors at West Point (2 Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics) including the teachers I did the thesis work with.

I had a pretty lame HS GPA at 3.25 but tried to pass that in my essay with the explanation that my Dad was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq for an aggregate total of 3 years between middle school and HS and I had to help my mom with my 3 siblings, all younger than myself (etc. etc.)

I smashed the essay and like to think I was more than a bit manipulative in my writing.

I explained my break in education as a moral obligation I felt to deploy with my former unit as they prepared to go to one of the more hostile providences of Afghanistan.

I’ve already been admitted to Vanderbilt University and the only other schools I’m applying to are Cornell (Close to home and my Dad’s school), and Columbia (love the city and it’s close to friends at West Point.)

Affirmation and advise are more than welcome. Thanks
