Rate My EC's

Hello everyone! I am a rising junior. It would really help me if you guys can rate my ec’s and tell me what I can do to improve

  1. Cheerleading:
I am a three year cheerleader on the JV team. I am two years in a row captain and I really love it. I am one of my coaches favorites and she gives me a lot of responsibility on the team such as running practices and games. My freshman year, I was a volunteer coach at an elementary school but the program fell through ( ): ). I’m speaking to other parents about bringing it back junior year as I need to have an adult supervisor.

  2. Softball:
I have been playing softball since I was 8. I started out as a sub who barely got into any games. When I entered middle school, me and my dad started working at it every day until I was the starting first basemen for my school team. I progressed as a player and when I started playing travel and high school I had to adjust to playing outfield. I worked hard and started there as well.

  3. Tutoring:
I work as a tutor for two kids (6th grade and 3rd grade) and put in about 10 hours a week. I have greatly helped the older girl to the point where she received 100% on her final math exam and the parents called to thank me. This is a job that I am paid for not a volunteer thing.

  4. Student Council:
I didn’t run my freshmen and sophomore years because I was scared of losing but after much convincing I finally ran for my junior year and got in. It was such a good feeling and I’m excited to start.

  5. Volunteer work for elementary school phys ed dept:
I sell raffle tickets at all events and volunteered 125 hours and their summer day camp which I plan on doing next year as well.

– These are really all I have. I put so much time during the school year into cheer, softball, and tutoring. Between those, sat prep and keeping my grades up I have no more time. I could join a few more clubs at school (power squad, spanish club) but I can’t really invest a lot of time in them. Should I do it anyway? I plan to join mission outreach which is my schools service club and liturgy crew which is for seniors only.

They are fine. Don’t join activities you really don’t care about just to add to your list. More important that you keep your grades up and work hard on your applications.

These are good. Being captain of the cheerleading team and having been elected to student council are both very good leadership examples. Many of these activities obviously take considerable time and schools will recognize that. People who have too many ECs make the admissions officers skeptical that they could really devote time to all of them.

I think your ECs are good just as they are. If you could get voted president (or the equivalent) of the student council next year then I would say they are very strong ECs.

These look very good - not especially unique, but they show a lot of leadership, energy and organizational skill. I’d suggest that unless you really love your volunteer work for the elementary school, you should discontinue that so you can put more time and energy into your other ECs. Think about what you can contribute to one of them that would have a really impact. Besides, you’ll need the extra time for college research in the second half of your junior year.
