Are you bored? Rate the EC's above you!

Schedules have been done. So here we go. The usual, rate /10. What is a 1 and what is a 10? Just feel it, go for it. Is this to brag? What isn't to brag? But this could honestly be helpful, showing you if you need to improve based on where you are applying.

Here's mine:

Field Hockey: JV Captain 10, Varsity Captain 12, play in summer leagues, help run a league that teaches little kids, all-county, all-region, play in national and state tournaments on a club team, being recruited by DIII/lower DI programs
Green Team: Co-President, co-wrote and won a grant for 2k, started and now maintain a raised bed garden that grows vegetables that are donated to the school cafeteria and local soup kitchens and are used to teach sustainability to high and elementary schoolers (no one likes middle school kids)
Lacrosse: Varsity Captain 12, play in summer and winter leagues
Spanish Honor Society: President, help run a program called Lassos that teaches math to students who don't speak/speak very little English (trying to teach twins that only spoke Czech math was quite the challenge)
Sigma Xi Honor Society: Science research honor society, won high school award, only 10 in county win.
National Honor Society: meh, required I guess
Tri-M Music Honor Society: I play violin but I kinda suck
Science Research: I have two published DNA clones I analyzed in the NCBI database, and my senior year I'm doing a project with neurotoxins that my mentor said is likely to be published
Work Experience: work ~15 hours a week as a hostess at a local restaurant

8/10 You have some really good science ECs, but I think you can add more to make your passion more prominent.

Here’s my planned list so far (Rising freshman, so I don’t have that much):

-By the end of junior year, I should have my 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do; I’m currently registered as a 1st degree black belt in some database in South Korea.
-I plan on volunteering at a hospital (science related EC). If I can, I may be able to get accepted into Emory’s volunteering program, so that would be pretty cool.
-I may become a math tutor to other people in my grade as part of a club.
-I may join HOSA.
-I might get accepted into the 2nd highest orchestra in my school this year, and I might get accepted into my school’s symphony orchestra sometime during high school. That would be good since the symphony orchestra has played at Carnegie Hall before.
-I should get National Merit Semifinalist since I got 2010 (superscored) on the SAT, but you never know.
-I am currently taking ABRSM tests in Music Theory, and if I pass a certain number of tests it will look good.

So yeah, my focus is primarily on science and the arts. How can I improve my ECs?

I’ll give Yakisoba 8/10, not that I’ve ever been a good judge of ECs.
The only recommendation I can think of is to get an internship sometime in your high school career.

I’m a rising senior. ECs are going to be the worst part of my application.
Hypotheticals are in blue. I got a 227 on the PSAT so I’ll probably get National Merit Something-or-Other.

Local chemical engineering mentorship, 50 hours (11)
Second mentorship, likely with an actuary, 50 hours (12)
Joining math club at dual-enrollment college (12)
Physics of Atomic Nuclei summer program at Michigan State (12)
Two local non-selective science camps, 70 hrs (12)
Scholastic Bowl, 1 hr/week (11, alternate)
Environmental club, 1 hr/week (11)
Science fair participant (10)

Piano, around 7 hrs/week (9, 10, 11, 12)
Volunteering at public library, 30 hrs/year (9, 10, 11, 12)
Cofounded book club at public library, 2 hrs/week (10, 11)
Published in Teen Ink (twice, 11)
Alateen, 1 hr/week (9, 10, 11, 12) ==> for occasional public speaking
School musical ensemble (10)

Working at McDonald’s, 5-10 hrs/week (11, 12)
Volunteering for Safety Town, 50 hrs (10, 12)

So has this, many times. But there’s nothing else to do, so…

Lol, I think I’m the only person on this website to ever get rejected from NHS.

8/10 since I feel like you live in a town and go to a school that doesn’t offer much.

-IDEA Magazine (the school’s literary magazine): 10, President and Editor-in-Chief 11-12. Produces an annual school-wide publication.

-Film Society: 10, 11, President 12. Produced a short film that won first prize in the Music Video category district-wide Film Festival.

-Christian Youth Fellowship: 10, Event Coordinator 11, President 12. Weekly meetings and annual outreach event.

-Model United Nations: 10, 11, President 12. Attend conferences.

-Office Assistant at a retirement center: 9-12. 300 hours.

-Film Club: President 11, VP 12. Watch and discuss films across all spectrums in depth.

-Academic Decathlon: 11, 12.

-Politics Club, 11-12: General member.

9.5/10 You obviously show passion and are on the top step of the ladder in most of your ECs ;)

I’m a rising sophomore, so I only have these 9th grade EC’s :)

-Academic Team, I competed for our school on televised matches and matches against local high schools

-Science Bowl, I was the captain of our Team 3 and we did well at states considering we were the less experienced team

-Model UN, I was Guinea for a local conference and hope to go to JHUMUNC sophomore year

-Envirothon, I was part of the freshman team.

-National History Day, I did individual documentaries since 8th grade. I plan on doing it in a group of two with a friend who’s transferring (finally!) to my school for IB.

-Future Medical Doctors of America, just a society to get on track with what you need to do in order to be a doctor of the future ;)

-Chess, like who wouldn’t want to be a grandmaster :D

-Student Writer at local courier (TBD I signed up this summer, and I still need some paperwork lolol)

-Math tutoring, like I did this once at my school, idk if it is an ec or not

8.5/10, you got a really good start! Keep on doing those activities and maybe try to lead some of your teams :)

-Model UN, 9-12: one of the top 5 seniors in the club, ~20 awards, attended dozens of conferences, I help teammates with their stuff and I’m part of the middle school MUN outreach program
-MUN summer program at UCLA, created a media campaign for an NGO and was specially recognized
-Mock Trial, 10-12: Secretary of club (12), I was a clerk sophomore year and a prosecution attorney junior year. Senior year I will be a head attorney on either the prosecution or defense.
-Key Club, 9-12: community service club, Director of Events (11)
-Link Crew 11th: we each mentored a group of assigned freshmen. Couldn’t so it senior year b/c of scheduling conflicts.
-National Chinese Honor Society 10-12: President, I basically did everything because no one helped lol
-History Society 11-12: possibly Co-president next year.
-Mu Alpha Theta, 11-12
-Piano since I was 6, reached Advanced level. Branch Honors for 3 consecutive years and Senior Award.
*-This year, I’m going to try to get a microfinancing program started at my school. I’ve actually been trying for 3 years (lol), but our principal is horrible and unfair. All the other schools in the district have one. I would be Co-President if I were to convince her to let me start it.
-Volunteer at library, 10-11
-Teaching intern at Chinese school on the weekends, 10-12

9/10! You definitely seem to enjoy all of your activities which is really great! Definitely as you continue through high school you will probably do even better with all your activities and win more awards! try to stay committed to the ones you REALLY like and be on the lookout for leadership positions!

Rising Junior ECs
-Speech Team (varsity, informative and extemporaneous speaking, past: dramatic interpretation)
-Math Team (qualified for state last year)
-Scholastic Bowl (not much to say about this because only seniors can be on varsity and actually win stuff haha)
-Muslim Students Association (head of publicity)
-French Honor Society (just got inducted last year, will probably be an officer)
-Tennis (will probably be quitting this year to make time for 5 AP classes and the turmoils of junior year)
-Lacrosse (JV last year, possibly JV captain and regular starter this year, planning to play on varsity next year
-Volunteer at outpatient desk at local hospital (patient transport, flower deliveries, smiling at people when they walk in, guiding lost and confused family members to the bed tower and ICU, also did I mention that volunteers get FREE FOOD?!?!?

Things that I would really like to do: Model UN, student council officer (i missed the campaigns last year), tutor at center for low income children (currently working on the application!), start a nonprofit with a few friends, and maybe start some sort of future doctors thing at my school since we dont have anything like that for any profession, really.

Oh, just so you know I was actually rating sazhassan’s ec’s! I guess I was still typing while vivendium posted!

I started a thread like this…

Rising Sophomore:

Founder of Model UN

Founder of FEMA Teen Community Emergency Response Team

Founder of Helping Other People with Engineering, a club where I teach computer basics and help Project Guttenberg

Founder of Wikipedia Club, where students edit wikis and do papers on alt-x stuff

Scientific Writer of R-SPACEE, a club where I teach inner-city students STEM stuff and do experiments at their elementary school

Treasurer of a really good Robotics team

Elected class rep (later quit, but I still won)

Captain of novice debate team, went to states, the highest in CT and was invited to Yale Osterweiss

Student Ambassador

Varsity Math Team

I also work at an immunology lab and will start working at a park in November; I am interested in environmental stuff, so I will do that at the park. I might also do research at the Yale School of Forestry

Oh I’m also in Spanish Honors Society, Center for Talented Youth and I will be taking a special online course in Japanese culture at Stanford

^Does your school give you credit for that?

@Apollo11, 10/10. I find founding one club, nevermind four clubs, to be extremely impressive.

Varsity cross country

Varsity spring track

School newspaper, Opinions editor

Key Club, Member

Interact Club, Secretary

Class Council, Vice-President

Student Council (whole school), Treasurer

A capella group, leading tenor

Fall play

School musical

School orchestra, double bass

Church Choir, leading tenor

Yearly service trips to Pittsburgh

CCD teacher (every Sunday)

National Honor Society, Member

Environmental Protection Club, Vice-President

Oliveoil15 and I were skipped, but it’s fine. :)

@vivendium I give you a 9.5/10, not only because you’re passionate but because you’re obviously accomplished in all of your extracurriculars and they’re also very unusual extracurriculars

@oliveoil15 I give you a 8/10, you are obviously very involved and passionate, plus it’s pretty clear that you’re not a lazy student, lol

@nickb14 10/10, I see a lot of accomplishments and passion. Keep up the good work!!

So for mine…I’m a rising sophomore so this is kind of my plan for the next four years, I guess?

Participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee 2010, 2011, and 2012 as a sixth grader (tied for 49th), seventh grader (tied for 42nd), and eighth grader (tied for 22nd)

Coaching my little sister in spelling 9-12, hopefully all the way to the National Spelling Bee by the time I’m in college. We shall see.

Member of NHS 10-12 (Q: do colleges actually care? A: Nope) Hopefully I’ll get elected to something, because they literally invite everybody at my school so it’s kind of a useless thing to do. At least where I attend school. I’m only doing it for my mom, haha.

Member of Key Club 10-12 I really, really hope that I get elected to something because this is something that I really want to get involved with.

Member of WE Fill in the Blank 10-12 This is basically a group that organizes political debates and speeches and stuff.

Academic Decathlon 10-12 In my region my school has the only competitive team, so I guess I’ll be going to State a lot, and hopefully win lots of individual medals fingers crossed, I should probably start hitting the books

Member of Lifeteen 9-12 This is a Catholic youth group, we’re very involved and also do a lot of fundraising for various conferences.

I think I will be required to do the STEM challenge junior year for IB (don’t ask me why, I think for CAS) so yeeahh

I was in the Spring Play this year but I don’t think I’ll be able to do any more theater stuff.

Okay, so UIL is basically a Texas-based competition, and these are the categories I will be competing in:

UIL Literary Criticism 10-12

UIL Spelling & Vocabulary 9-12 This year I went all the way to state (the highest level), but sadly got second place there. The team barely missed going to state, got second place at regionals. In the future I hope to get first in state, and for the team to qualify as well, so hopefully that all happens by senior year. Also, I think that I’ll be team captain for the next three years.

Hmm… 8/10. I like the consistency with English/spelling themed activities, but you have some nice variety as well.

Now, for mine… future reviewer, please include a short explanation of your rating if it’s not too much trouble.

Clubs:
Quiz bowl (9-12: JV captain freshman year, varsity team member, possibly co-captain 11-12)
Writing for an art magazine (10-12)
Art ‘director’ at the theater club (10-12: organizing set design/prep 2 times a year)
Model Congress (10-12)
Science honor society (10-12)
Art honor society (10-12)
NHS (11-12)

Volunteer:
Society that promotes the arts in my area (10-12)
Micro-financing businesses in developing countries aka KIVA
Raising money to build/finance a school in rural China (10-12)
Volunteer at art museum and public library (summers)

Honestly I don’t think number ratings should be given. Like what’s the criteria to judge your ecs.
I like how your ECs focus on Art. It shows your passion for it. I also like how you’re volunteering is related to your school clubs. Also you started from the bottom as JV captain making it up to hopefully varsity captain.

Math Team

Two varsity sports (this year will be captain)

All Conference/All Tournament last year

Part time job at local fast food place

National Honor Society

Served as mentor at an English camp to teach local teenagers about American high school life and help them practice their English

I spend a vast amount of time at a Non Prof that assists soldiers while they are away overseas

This was my first year at the place where I live and anyone who plays sports knows how hard it is to do other ECs (if you miss practice you can’t play)

But this year I hope to do a lot more!

This is literally the most CC thread I have ever seen

^Then you missed the last 2 on the exact same topic.

New CC game: Rate each other’s EC’s. Seek validation in form of /10.

CC kids, heh.

Your a CC adult on the HS forum… what does that say about you?
