Hey I am a senior in high school from France. Please rate my essay! this is an sat topic.

should students who work very hard in a course earn very high grades, or should achievement rather than effort determine students' grades?

I believe than a student's grade must be determine by two factors: persistance and capability. A student who lacks diligence, but is anyway awarded with an A for his capability, will not succeed when more complicated issues or problems arise. On the other hand, a student who doesn't have the sufficient intellectualism to get an A, but is still a stubbornly hard-working kid, should recur to other resources to find out what the main problem is.

In high school, there are many students who are amazingly gifted in every field, and are unaware of what a difficult course might be. In my high school years, my best friend, the valedictorian of the class, had never studied for a test; everything came easy for him: accolades, scholarships, friends. But once he entered college, the situation changed. Classes were more difficult, and instead of studying as a normal college student would do, he partied and stayed up late watching tv. He ended up being expelled from the college. He couldn't keep up with the pace from a thriving environment. If teachers had shown him that capability wasn't the only requirement for life, I am sure he would have reached his goals.

Another stereotype in high school, is the hard-working, assiduous student, who studies but can't achieve what he wants. In this case, I was one of these students. My high school years were failure after failure. I studied, I listened, but no one would answer my questions. My teachers' response to my incapability to reach a good grade were the following: "Work harder", "Try again". As junior year begun, I realized I had to figure out why I was failing. I begun studying with a tutor. After two weeks, my tutor had discovered why I was failing in class. It turned out to be my concentration. Within a year, I started to improve my grades, and fulfilled my dream of going to college.

In conclusion, teachers should grade with two elements in mind: merit and perseverance. In the end, a grade is much more than just a letter.
