Told my GC that I wasn’t satisfied with my previous courses and that I want to change my junior year schedule.
APUSH
APES
AP Calc AB
AP Physics 1
AP Comp Sci Principles
AP Psychology
English 11 Honors
Would this be overdoing it? I have access to online summer courses to prepare for APUSH and Physics 1
Yes, potentially.
Depending upon your target colleges, not taking a foreign language may hurt. Also keep in mind that you will be preparing for SAT/ACT, which will take some time. And I’m assuming you also have ECs that will require some time.
Are you actually interested in these classes or are you just taking them because they are APs/weighted?
Taking AP Environmental Science and AP Psychology over regular/non-AP courses that are very important to overall course rigor, such as foreign language level 4, will not go well for you. After eight APs, you aren’t really helping your course rigor any more, especially when the additional APs either aren’t core classes or are core classes that you’ve already covered.
Even if you were actually interested in these classes, you should be devoting a lot of time junior year to test prep and extracurricular activities, and a schedule with six APs might detract from those important objectives. Since you seem to be very STEM oriented, you should keep Calculus, Physics, CSP and APUSH (a very important class, or so I’ve heard) and save Environmental and Psych for senior year or college; I don’t believe that either of them are “hard” sciences and although APES is a core class, you already have an advanced, more rigorous science course.
Definitely take a language instead of APES/AP Psych. Most colleges recommend/require 3 years while 4 is better. If you’ve already maxed out one pick up a different one, if possible.
Thanks for the feedback, I am already enrolled at my local SAT prep camp for the summer (Planning to take the SAT before school starts) but you do make a point about EC’s since I do a sport. I tried to lighten the load by dropping orchestra this year and re-adding it senior year.
That’s WAY overkill.
What did your GC say?
(Keep in mind top colleges expect 6-8 TOTAL, and well chosen.)
Drop either AP CSP or APES and potentially AP Psychology. Make sure you have a foreign language class (a core class and expected at level 4 or AP at top schools) and perhaps keep orchestra or take a fun class.
