Hey there. I'm rather miserable at my college. I have no friends I can hang out with and I feel like I don't fit in. I'm involved in the marching band, but I have only acquaintances. Academically, I'm doing OK. I just don't feel challenged. Most of the people in my dorm party and drink, which I don't do. There are few kids in the band I hang out with at times. They usually play Halo and talk about Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, which is cool, but I also don't do that.

I'm planning on transfering by the end of my sophomore yr, but I want to make the most of my time here. Any adice would help. And no, I'm not an anti-social.

Are there any other groups you're interested in? Perhaps something connected with your major? Student government? Your religiion? Most schools have an involvement/activity fair, where you can meet others.

It can take a while to find friends. What about forming/joining a study group? Have you tried meeting people in your college at lunch? Try joining someone who is lunching alone & strike up a conversation (easier said than done) about weather, school current events, sports, where folks are from, etc. Intramurals? A sports and/or dance and/or craft class? Ask your RA if you can help plan some activities with/for the dorm to meet other folks who aren't so into the party/drinking scene. (I assure you, those folks DO exist & probably also think there aren't any folks like them.)

It must be time to start planning & registering for next term--meet with your advisor about choosing courses you'll find more interesting & challenging for the next term, including at least one FUN course.

im assuming your a freshmen (like me). Dont worry, ive heard things get much better. We've (well I have) only been in school for like 3 weeks. You can't expect to have a large group of friends like you did in high school within three weeks.

I hear you about being in the band and there being a lot of geeks/kids into geeky things around.

I was part of a "society" called BandPreps when I was in HS. We were in band but not into that stuff (i.e. we liked sports instead of geeky games, dressed in A&F, liked mainstrem movies, etc...you know, not the stereotypical band kid). Rather small group but they were my best buddies. (And if you're wondering I made up the name BandPreps for the group)
