RD Chances?

I had my entire application complete by November 1st... Except the writing supplement which I submitted yesterday... does that affect my chances at all considering the deadline is a week away??

Also... I was just accepted to Notre Dame EA if that is comparable to Vandy at all!

I don’t think the date you submit your application affects your admissions decision. I think you’re a very competitive applicant! Your ACT and GPA are in the range of admitted students, and your ECs are solid. You’d obviously have a better chance applying ED2, but I still think you have a good chance of being accepted. Of course, since it’s Vanderbilt there’s no guarantee. Good luck!

Thank you!! Funny because I was just going to ask how big of a difference does it make to apply ED2 at Vandy as opposed to RD… Even though Vandy is my number 1, I’m hesitant about committing (Air Force Academy, Chapel Hill, Notre Dame are high on the list).

You’re in, hoopjack. Very impressive multisports commitment of time AND a ton of other stuff. If you don’t get in, the rest of us are in trouble.

Regular decision is about a 10% acceptance rate - ED about 20%. Your stats seem to be in the sweet spot of accepted students … but the acceptance rate is so low, nothing is ever a sure thing.

Congrats on ND!

Applying ED2 vs RD does make a fairly sizable difference. If Vandy truly is your #1, consider doing ED2. But I completely understand about other colleges being high on your list as well! Either way, I’m almost certain you’ll get in! ED2 will just give you an even better chance of being admitted.

You are a very strong candidate and have what Vanderbilt values. Your academic profile, EC’s, leadership, community service, and peer evaluations are excellent. You enrich and enliven your high school and community and everything you touch turns to gold. While no one is a sure bet you should get in Vanderbilt and many other top U’s. Good luck!

You are going to get in… Way to rep MN xc!

your fellow posters are being upbeat but I have seen plenty of ACT 35s rejected in RD round. It’s just crushing to see how the numbers of fully qualified admits are just impossible to predict now…so Vandy should be viewed similar to Duke and other schools with many many applicants in odds.
Congrats on your ND admission. Notre Dame has a great all round experience for students. You can enter the RD round if you choose with that in your pocket.
And as an AF brat, the AF Academy is no slouch either if you have an application in there.
You are blessed with that ND admission so you should be looking with a strong jaded eye now at financial aid and how that will shake out re your family’s personal Estimated Cost of Attendance, and your family’s willingness and ability to pay. Keeping in mind that Vandy does not have loans in financial aid packages, compare this potential with the offers you are likely to get elsewhere. Think about your long term educational goals and the costs and think about what kind of income you can generate if you have loans.

be proud of your excellent HS record~ and good luck!

Thank you for all of the replies! Part of me wants to do ED2 just to feel more comfortable, but can I even switch to ED2 if I already submitted my app RD? Also, do ED2 students find out their admissions decision any sooner than RD applicants?

Quick random question… how does Vandy look at demographics? Does being from MN boost/hurt/not affect my chances?

Another quick thing, I applied to the school of engineering despite zero involvement with engineering in my ECs… does Vandy consider what school you are applying to in admissions? Are some harder to get into than others?

I have no idea about how your demographics or engineering ECs will affect your chances. I agree completely with Faline2; you’re likely to get in, but like I said, there is no guarantee. I’m pretty sure you can switch your RD application to ED2, and ED2 applicants are notified by Feb 15 while RD applicants are notified by April 1.

@hoopjack

even though many of the people here are telling u that ED2 helps your chances and stuff (which it will cause ur application seems strong based on what you have told us) you should ONLY DO IT if you LOVE LOVE LOVE vandy and it is your top choice meanin u would have chosen it over all other schools any day of the week…and u gotta account for fin aid as well (even tho vandy’s fin aid can only be beat by HYPS+)…you would stand a fine chance at RD and although ED2 would probs help you a little bit its not as much as to say tht you wouldnt get in RD but would get in ED2 just slightly better chances… i would apply RD cause u stand a chance (great probs) and u shud keep options open… just my .02

my angle is this: apply ED if your family is happy with the pricetag and make sure Vandy knows it is your number one choice. The message in an ED2 application is that you will be proud to attend without any mixed signals.

The complication is that Vandy applicants are offered the best their state flagships have to offer in honors options. Also you might be holding out for merit offers of reduced tuition at private colleges that are less selective than Vanderbilt.

Our Vandy son held out, did RD because the recession had just hit and he was mentally prepared to attend the flagship colleges of his home state. This is the only way to go if you do RD. Those who are going to use Vandy’s no loan finanicial aid heavily are the true ED winners. Attach to your match college and know that if you have Vandy type stats, you will graduate from your flagship with honors and many excellent options. We have lived long enough to have seen public school VA graduates do just as well as our Vandy/Duke grads in the next round of life in graduate school. Always look at your long game. If your family is happy with the financial aid estimates ED round at Vandy…go for it. But keep your heart open and be flexible re the colleges on your list…respect each of them. Whether or not you get into Vanderbilt does not limit you in any way if you are on your game in college.
