rd decisions are in!! big decisions to make now

I'm an international and I got waitlisted by Swarthmore. What are the chances of getting in from the waitlist like?

Thanks bts, I'd have liked to meet you!

inuendo the intl student ambassador I contacted said he got off the waitlist after he sent in a polished essay on why he wanted to go there, earlier he'd just jotted down some stuff.

Thanks. Do you think I should send additional materials such as an essay in now or once I receive my waitlist letter and all?

You should send a letter (personal) saying how interested you are in the school. Give specific reasons. If you can send an additional recommendation, that would be good too!

I got waitlisted too. As soon as I opened the mailbox and didn't see the "fat envelope," I knew it wouldn't be good news. I don't think I'll accept a place on the waitlist, though I would be interested in seeing some data on the number of people who have gotten in off the waitlist in past years. Adding my name to the waitlist would begin another phase of stress, which I'm not too keen on after two years of the college admissions "rat race." I read "The Gatekeepers," and I know that just putting your name on the list isn't enough--you've got to let them know that for you, it's Swarthmore or bust. I already put a lot of time into showing Swarthmore I'm interested, through reading what seemed like everything ever written about Swat, visiting, sitting in on classes, interviewing, and filling out the best application I could. I can't see sending a card in to let Swarthmore know they're my absolute #1 choice when they aren't even deadset about wanting me. I'd have to go through the process of choosing another college, all the while keeping the Swarthmore candle burning. And even if I did get in off the waitlist, there would always be that feeling that I was a second-rate Swattie, not good enough to be admitted with the rest of the class. Waitlists are not for a person as indecisive as me. Letting Swarthmore go will be hard, but I'll have to do it. The waitlist certainly does sting, because I know I had the "numbers" to get in, which tells me that something else about my application was lacking. Of all the schools I applied to, I think Swarthmore was the only one that truly considered these qualifications (though other schools claimed to do so, I'm not convinced that they did), so it hurts to know that when someone finally looked past my numbers, there was nothing that stuck out. In the end, maybe the admissions committee saw that I don't quite have what it takes to be a Swattie. Be that as it may, it doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to have given it a shot.

Sorry for the long post. I guess it's kinda like my Swarthmore swan song. Congrats to all of you who were admitted, and good luck to all of you that weren't...here's hoping that come May 1st, we all end up happy with our decisions!

I've been waitlisted at every single LAC I applied to!!!!!!

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Bohemian:

I know it's gotta be a kick in stomach. But, I think you've got a healthy attitude. Sometimes you just have to say, "it wasn't meant to be"; Swarthmore's loss! Being from Jersey made it an uphill climb, just because of the huge pool of applicants from that region.

BTW, over the last 5 years Swat has averaged 20 to 50 people taken off the waitlist each year. I don't think it's any kind of stigma at all. For the most part, those waitlist folk are "replacing" kids who got accepted to HYPSM and opted to enroll at on of those schools.

I am an international applicant too and I havent received my decision letter either. I am currently studying in the U.S., so I receive regular U.S. mail. I am from Panama.

crosses fingers and hopes for a big packet

MzLover3 my s just got waitlisted from Swat too. So far he's been waitlisted at three places and we're still waiting on 5 more. It's very difficult to go thru. Have you been admitted anywhere? He has no rejections or admissions, just waitlists. So discouraging.

I feel for your son :(

I have gotten into UCLA and 99.99% sure I'll get into Berkeley......but I really want to go to LAC :(

I really don't understand why I'm waitlisted....I'm have a near perfect transcript, 1350 SAT, 770 SAT II average, first generation, and I'm Hispanic!

BLAH

i got my first rejection letter today.:( well swarthmore isnt good enough for me. hahaha. oh by the way, i live in va and the letter is dated march 28. it's a little bigger than the standard envelope, but very thin. the letter is short and to the point.

good luck everyone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

MzLover3 I'm glad to hear that you've at least gotten in someplace, although I know how disappointed you must feel. How many LACs did you get waitlisted at? Do you think they all have long waiting lists?

Well, my son, who happens to be out of the country right now and so doesn't even know it yet, just received an acceptance from Swarthmore. (We're in the Midwest, if anyone is trying to gauge delivery times.) Although I am of course pleased for him, I also feel for those who have posted here about being waitlisted or rejected. While I wouldn't want to promote false hopes, if it is any consolation, I recall that the student who gave us a campus tour last spring (he's also on their DVD) made a particular point of telling us that he'd been accepted off the waitlist, which showed, as he put it, that there's "life after the waitlist."

Best of luck to all of you.

And thanks to those who have posted thus far on the thread I started here to talk about the differences among Swarthmore, Williams, and Amherst. The discussion thus far - and I expect that there will likely be more of it - has been very informative and illuminating.

Just got the acceptance envelope...omg, I can't believe it. I'm so thrilled. Still waiting to hear from financial aid office but I've totally set my mind on going. It's my no.2 school and hopefully after Ride the Tide, it'll be #1 :-).

i got waitlisted - what are the chances of admission?

Rejection #4. And my confidence takes another blow.

what type of envelopes were the acceptance letters in as compared to the envelopes of the rejections

waitlisted as well.
pomona took me, so i'm not horribly upset but there are some distinct things about swat culture that stood out and are different from pomona's. the problem for me is i've never visited, and i really wasn't sure if i wanted to pay 40k/year in the first place and basically go into massive debt (we're in the too-rich too-poor situation).
the not visiting may have not been wise- since i'm from the east coast, and they probably get a lot of applicants from my state.
just now i can't go to ride the tide, so i'm a little at a loss of what to do next- the truth is that not seeing swat in person, though i love it on paper, makes it so i can't quite sign up for the wait-list yet, and there is that bohemian mentioned- committing to one college while still keeping the swat candle burning..

My son's acceptance came in a large (10" x 13") envelope, with a message on the flap: "This is the FAT one!"

yeah how does that work? if you commit to one college, then if swat decides to take you off of the waiting list.. do you automatically go to swat?
