RD Notification Date

Any idea when RD applicants will be notified?

They prefer Fridays, so likely this Friday or the next…but I was deferred EA and decisions came out like a day before the deadline of Feb.1st (or cutting it somewhere really close, given every other school I applied EA released weeks before their Feb 1 deadline).

So for now, plan on next Friday (though I’d be surprised if they released after Ivies).

On CollegeData’s website it says March 20th which is this Thursday. I don’t know how much credibility is in that but they are generally close with admissions.

Hmm, idk about reliability, but past decisions are from the 20th to the 23rd. And they don’t do Sundays. So safe to assume this fridday tbh.

Sorry for the double post, but does anyone know what it means if the Connect Carolina page is completely different than before? That is, a few days ago the layout was different. Does this indicate acceptance?

Also, does anyone know if after being deferred, the decision will revert back to “thank you for applying…” or continue to say “click here to view your decision”? Right now it still says “click here to view your decision,” and it shows the deferred decision. When decisions are released, will it override the deferred decision and show the updated one?

I would think it’ll just override the current message. We’ll still get an e-mail to check, and when the time comes it’ll be a different letter.

Question though @texasgirl32 , I was deferred too. Remember how we got that “okay here’s how to use the portal, good luck” email like 2 days before decisions for EA? Do you think the same will happen now? As in, if we don’t get it tomorrow it won’t be this week?

Yes, I am hoping that they will post on the admissions blog, like they did the day before EA release, how to view your decision. I think they will because many RD applicants would have the same questions about how to access the decision as the EA applicants did. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a blog post on Thursday for decisions on Friday.

I spoke with an admissions counselor on Wednesday, March 12 and they said that we should be hearing from them in about two and a half weeks. Two and a half weeks from March 12 bring us to approximately March 28, which will be the day that we will most likely be hearing back, seeing that they generally release decisions on fridays and if what occurred with early action this year is any indication, they are releasing decisions a week later than in previous years. I hope this relieves some of your curiosities as 1. no email came today so it will not be this week and 2. now you have a better gauge of when you will find out!

All this waiting is driving me nuts! I just want to know already!

I think they HAVE to say that they’ll be done by the end of the month just in case something goes wrong and they need more time down to the wire. If everyone called and they gave an earlier release date than that, and it didn’t come out on that day, there’d be chaos. So I don’t think you got any insider information.

Anyone else think it’s a bit silly though that a week or so time extension would mean a week later of decisions than normal? It’s not like NOBODY had submitted anything right before deadlines when the site was crashing. They should’ve started to review applications that were in, and just review the others as they came in. I’d be pretty upset if we found out next week, especially Friday after the Ivies.

I’m holding out hope for a blog post today, but it’s not looking good.

i wouldn’t get your hopes up for this week, guys. There was a post on the admissions blog today and it wasn’t about checking the application status

So ridiculous. I hope they release before next Friday at least, as they did for EA. It’s very hard to want Carolina when other colleges have already released decisions and UNC continues to frustrate me.

To be fair, though, I guess when you’re as good a school as UNC you have the luxury of making people wait as long as you’d like. Grrr

Hi, I applied for UNC-CH regular decision because I wanted to take that first semester and improve my grades. Can anyone tell me my chances of getting into UNC-CH? and I am instate male
ACT Score: 34 Composite
SAT Subject Test: 740 in Chemistry and 800 in Math
GPA: there is a GPA calculation issue with wake county… its not offocial… but my guidance counselor calculated it to be a 4.14. But, on my transcript, I had a 3.95 weigted GPA
Teacher Recs: I am pretty sure they will be above average or really good. I also had a recommendation from a UNC professor who I interned with over summer. Does that help at all?
ECs: I had average to above average ECs on my resume and common app
Essays: I am pretty sure I had decent essays…
Reason why my GPA is so low: my GPA does not reflect my intellect. In 10th grade, I received horrible grades due to personal problems (family). But, I rebounded in 11th grade getting all B’s and 1A. Then in 12th grade 1st semester, I received All A’s and one B. So, I have been on an upward trend. Does UNC-CH take this into account at all?
Can anybody guess my chance of getting in? I applied to GA Tech Engineering school and got waitlisted… I also got waitlisted from NorthEastern… the surprising thing is that I got denied from NC State.

@teamtarheels The question is what is your Unweighted GPA, as well as what are you applying to in UNC?
Judging by your current stats, I would say you are good for general admissions definitely.

However, if you are going for a major that is severely impacted, that is one that take top priority for, then EC specifics and unweighted GPA are needed for the calculation.

My unweighted is around a 2.85 and a 2.9. Ad I said… If you look at my junior and senior year grades… The goal doesn’t reflect my intellect .and I applied to the biology major.

It is rather surprising to see one with a high ACT score such as yourself with a low GPA. UNC, like most colleges, obviously look at upward trends in students grades. I can’t honestly say you are definitely in or out, but keep in mind that these guys are looking for top tier people.

And idk what you mean by ‘The goal’, however everything reflects your intellect. If you have a high quality set of ECs , have any edge based on URM and/or upwards trend in grades, then you might have a better competitive advantage in terms of getting in.

GPA does in fact matter, so im wondering how your Weighted can be anywhere near as high compared to your unweighted. May I ask what AP/honors courses you took?

As you can see, there is a drop in grades during 10th grade, but my grades rose in 11th and on. Will colleges (UNC) be able to see this trend? and understand that I am on a rise, if i may say? and also… some of these classes I took are some of the hardest APs offered… its not like I did not challenge myself in any of my highschool years. Does this give you a better clarity about my chances?
and also, in my guidance counselor recommendation, she told me she had included about my drop in grades and rise afterwars… and as i mentioned, I interned under a proffesor in the bme department in UNC and got a recommendation from her. Will that have any positive impact at all?

Thank you!!

Yes, I do believe these points will have a positive impact. The question now stands if this would be good enough to get you in. I do believe that with your weighted GPA and recommendations, you have a decent chance. The problem would be your 10th grade drop in grades.

Have you included why something like that might happen in your application somehow? Because if they don’t know how or why it happened, they might assume that whatever happened in 10th grade could happen again in college. Try comparing yourself to others here, do you think you should be accepted?

yes. I told my counselor the reasons for my decline in grades; and she told me she tried her best to explain that in her recommendation. But, since I do not see the rec… idk how well/detailed she explained it. Comparing my self to others, I beleive I should be accepted, because I have been very determined since my decline. I gave up alot of other interests/friends/hangouts to focus on my grades and my test scores. My concerns are that… I got waitlisted from GA Tech and NorthEastern. Both are really good colleges and North Eastern has almost the same selectivity as UNC-CH. But I applied to Northeastern out of state, and I am applying to UNC in state. So, I felt kind of happy when i got waitlisted from NorthEastern out of state, because I thought, I have a decent chance of getting into UNC-Ch. But then, yesterday, I got denied from NC Sate. I was really confused on why that happened. Now I am starting to feel really worried again. But then I realized, NCSU did not have my recommendations, nor do they take my SAT Subject test scores, and I did not write an essay for them except a personal statement (but in that statemenet, I explained about my grades). Can you please tell me if I am thinking on the right track? Like since i got waitlisted from North Eastern and GA Tech out of state… should I have a decent chance of getting in UNC-CH instate? or since I got denied from NCSU… are my chances even lower now? Help…really confused and scared!
