I'm looking for some reach schools for microbio or the bio field. Preferably on the east coast and some not. Im a ca resident, 3.37 gpa with 35 credits, transfer student. Over 300 hours of EC, president of a club, also includes tutoring. Grades are on an upward climb from a bad semester in college 2.5 to 3.6 to 3.8 to 4.0 (each are semesters).
I don't really know what would be a reach for me. Suggestions?
(my first choices for non-reach are SBU RU-NB and Poly-NYU)

Why do you think that your list must contain some “reach” schools? It makes much more sense to identify programs that are interesting for you, then sort that list into reaches/matches/safeties. If in your initial search, you only identify places that qualify as reaches, you need to dig a bit deeper to find some in the match and safety categories. However, if what you come up with the first time around turns out to be all matches and safeties then you are good to go!

I actually did what you just recommended. I hinted at it by putting my first choices. At the beginning of this month I had 17 schools. Now I am down to 3 because my college situation is not urgent. I am not applying to any safeties because one applying to Rutger’s NB gives you one (Almost all applicants get a “complementary” admission to Rutger’s Newark). Two I could stay at CC another semester if I don’t get into my first choices because I still have few requirements to complete to be able to transfer UCs. I don’t really want to stay because I hate my job, I hate the weather, I don’t get along with my household, and I work better when alone. (Trying to cover all aspects of everyones possible responses to make this as efficient as possible). Money is not really an issue either (I’m not rich but in the event that my parents die and the money gets spilt it will be more than enough to equate for my college debt). I have found the schools I like and am extremely interested in that are not a reach (SBU, Poly-NYU, RU-NB). I never researched reach schools. I’ve tried but I’m not positive what my reach is you know? Thats why I posted this because I don’t know what is considered a far-reach or just a reach. I was hoping someone would have a good opinion so I didn’t to spend time really looking again (My work load is large not that I am complaining). I was reading the posts what people wish they knew when they applied, 80% said I wish I had applied to more reach schools. I want to apply to at least 3 of them. But thank you for your input when I was first starting I wish someone had pointed me in a direction!
