I am currently a junior and have a few safeties/matches in mind, but don’t know how high to aim for my reaches. I plan on majoring in finance so prestige matters quite a bit but its not my main or only goal.
My only real need is good financial aid(meets 100% need or close). I’d prefer a college in the northeast/mid atlantic region and preferably mid sized. A school with a pre professional vibe compared to a liberal artsy vibe is good too.
My stats are a ~98 UW, ~101 W GPA with 3 AP/8 honors classes which my GC said would be the most rigorous at my school. I am ranked third out of a little over a hundred. My PSAT is a 1400 and I expect around that for the SAT. I took the Bio E SAT II and got a 710. I can take Math II too but only really selective colleges require these so IDK if I need it.
My main ECs are FBLA(president), Varsiy Tennis(singles), Model UN(secretary), and an engineering competition. I have a few other clubs but those are the most important ones. I made it to states in FBLA but probably won’t make nationals. I have some smaller accomplishments too but its not too impressive. Most likely a National Merit Commended which probably means nothing. I have considered Georgetown and Carnegie Mellon as reaches but they seem “too reachy” and would like to look into more schools. Any reach suggestions considering my stats and preferences?
How good of a tennis player are you? That skill could help you get into a reach school
Do some homework and see where you compare to other players already at those schools
email coaches and start a dialogue
The NESCAC Conference has good academics and good athletics
Best of luck
An addition to my previous post: Michigan has not been the best with financial aid for out-of-state students, but I heard of a good amount of out-of-state students with higher financial need received great aid last year.
@fleishmo6 I’m not good enough to be recruited/play on a college team. Also no NESCAC school has business programs.
@mamaedefamilia I have looked at Temple as a safety because of their automatic scholarships but I’m looking for some reach options. I thought it would be too reachy because my stats(especially ECs/awards) aren’t too great for CMU, also I am an Asian male and I’m applying to business which is one of the more competitive majors.
@yikesyikesyikes @“Erin’s Dad” I know UMich is great for business but being an OOS I thought it would be too reachy and FA for OOS isn’t too great I’ve heard. If I’m not mistaken, only UNC and UVA meet need for OOS but that includes a lot of loans. I thought UMich only met need for in state, but I’ll look more into it.
@merc81 Duke, WUStL, and Colgate don’t have undergrad b schools AFAIK, and I really like Penn but I thought that would be way out of reach.
I looked at UMich FA online and if their “family profiles” are accurate then it might actually end up being affordable for me: http://finaid.umich.edu/family-profiles/
You are right, not business but Econ major. NY firms recruit on campus and many students from Williams, Amherst and Midd work on Wall Street.
My son Grads in May and will be starting a job upon graduation in NY
So you should revisit those schools
@merc81 The PSAT is out of 1520 but according to collegeboard that’s to take into account that the PSAT is easier, so the PSAT score is a prediction of what you would have scored if you took the SAT with no further practice. It was a 99th percentile score, but not 99+
I can see how that could have been their potential design, but it doesn’t appear to convert logically mathematically. For example, if a student scores a perfect 1520 on the PSAT, that would appear to indicate a future 1600 SAT score – much more so than one of 1520 – as a good possibility. However, I’m making these inferences with less information than you may have in front of you.
