K guys, this is a question i have always asked. I hate reading, but im not bad in english. I go to the most competitive school in the city which gives me plenty of reading. But during the summer, should i be reading a lot of novels and stuff. I hate reading, but people say its good. Is it really that necessary. Please dont leave comments like "it doesnt hurt". Thanks.

you read for your own personal fulfillment, on topics or stories that interest you. not to get into an ivy league school (or whatever ends you deem "necessary"). personally i read about three, maybe four, novels/books that gauge my outside interest each summer just cuz its a good time to catch up on it since i can't really do it during the school year- i've enjoyed reading since a young age i guess. most of these selections now are like word of mouth books that have topics that sound interesting to me (and harry potter) and that will give me a respite from some of the other literature that we read in class during the school year that tends to be more boring. i think its pretty necessary, since i can't be watching sportscenter or baseball tonight or barry bonds' futile at bats towards 755 all summer.

If you don't want to read, you don't have to and you should not force yourself to do so.

i agree with u, i shouldnt have to, but people say that i should have to read because it will increase my vocabulary and my writing which will help me on the SAT thus increasing my chances at penn, but i just abhor the book. I mean, its not a personal interest. So yeah. Do u agree with the people that contradict my ways when it comes to reading?
