reading list

did anybody get the reading list?

Nope -- don't they send us a book assignment with our dorm assignment? I thought that was supposed to be sent out this Friday and therefore arrive at our homes maybe over the weekend or early next week.

Did y'all know that the authors of the books on the reading list are going to be speaking at orientation? I'm uber-excited!

i don't think Homer will be there.

ok EXTREMELY stupid question so be gentle...do we have to read whats on the list? i mean what exactly is it for?

forgive my stupidity...

i dont think you have to read it, its just for discussion and "Getting to know each other" purposes.... not really sure though...

i think the SLE kids have to actually read Homer's The Odyssey (Lombardo translation) for class discussion. I might be wrong but that's what they did last year.

yeah, George Eliot couldn't make it last year either :p (they had to read Middlemarch) so they got one of the editors of Middlemarch... or the writer who wrote the introduction to one of the editions, maybe AS Byatt. They do have some modern books on the list though.

wait, do we have to read ALL of the books on the reading list? I mean, (speaking about last year) Middlemarch is long enough as it is... well at least we don't have to write essays, hehe. poor Cornell kids. Or maybe the list is made up of a book for each type of dorm - SLE kids read one book, FroSoCo another, the regular dorm kids another, etc...

That was the impression I got (that it's a book for each dorm), but I may be mistaken. I might just read all or most of the books on it anyway, though, just to satisfy my curiousity as to why Stanford would pick those particular works.

well unfortunately i never read more literature than necessary for school...so chances of me reading the book if its ot required are slim to none. but who knows, i may actually read it. i mean if i'm going to survive at stanford, might as well get used to reading a lot. whyyyy can't we just to some math problems or research a science phenomenon???

ugh, no way!!! I'd rather be forced to read The Tale of Genji in its entirety than do some science homework :p I think it'll be required though... coqui, which IHUM did you pick? I read somewhere that the reading for Journeys is the least taxing and the most interesting (well, depending on your tastes), so if you don't like reading much, then that class'll probably suit you best. or Transformations - it's not all reading - opera and movie watching are required in addition to reading.

i choose visions of mortality. i don't mind reading as long as its interesting and i WANT to read it. but if its something i really don't care about (basically everything i had to read in high school) then i rarely read the whole thing. yay for sparknotes...

I just checked approaching stanford update and it says the dorm assignment packet is being delayed until the August 15th week...

bade...that sucks...dorm assignments are the most exciting thing we get until orientation.

wait, so just to clarify...this reading list is for sle people only? or if not, where did people get it?

nah everyone has a book to read and we will get it in the same mailing packet that we will get our dorm assignment.

Ugh, that's frustrating... so they won't even be mailing it out until that week?

Yeah and not even ON August 15 but the site said something like on the week of August 15th but the exact date will be posted later. Kind of sucks.

why does stanford feel the need t send everything so late all the time. damn them for their reputation that allows them to do that and not lose students...

yeah...shame about the delay. I read on the yahoo group that this year we'll be getting three short book to read as opposed to choosing from a selection of long books... Don't know if that's right, though, and I wouldn't really trust myself with info anyway; last year, they read Middlesex, not Middlemarch. d'oh.

I want that list! I hope I can find it here though... never heard of Middlesex. or the other books they had to read (Caucasia?)

LOL, coqui, I know what you mean. Many of my friends already know their room assignments, roommates, and class schedules.
