I just bought the B.G. and M. Butterfly--I couldn't find the right translations of the Odyssey in the local Borders, and that Bible is $45 (!) so I'm going to shop around a bit for it.

I read Annie John in 9th grade English and hated it, as did all my friends. We read M. Butterfly last year in Gender and Sex (senior english elective) and I thought it was really awesome, great twist at the end, but DO NOT READ THE BACK COVER OR ANY BOOK REVIEWS OR SUMMARIES. It will spoil it. And that would just be sad. I think I'll reread M. Butterfly just for fun, don't plan on getting near Annie John, and I'll read Old School since someone said it was good.

I just finished Old School. I managed to find it and M Butterfly at my local library (I don't intend on buying them, just gonna read 'em). Old School is well written, but I can't say I particularly enjoyed it (I prefer novels with a broader scope, more plot and more humor). Still, I can see many areas for discussion and it was an easy read. I think I'll start on the Gita next. Mmm, epic poetry.

I bought my books from www.half.com and total order for all 3 including shipping was about 18 bucks.

i second that "mm epic poetry" =)

old school was awesome~!

yay..anywho..are we supposed to read all three books??? argg

okay sorry, yeah one of the earlier threads already answered that Q, okay then uh another question i have is: do we get graded for the discussion and everything on these books? at our dorms?

I don't think we get graded, what would they do with the grade? :P

M Butterfly is my favorite out of the three. It's got a lot of layers, plus it's pretty funny.

I think it's just for intellectual stimulation, bonding, and getting to know one another. And a little bit of a wow effect about Stanford, 'cause we get to see the actual authors, which I at least think is pretty cool. So... I'd guess no grade, but I'm planning on reading 'em all anyway.

i loved that ayn rand part. she was entertaining, to say the very least. :)

Annie John was a bore, but Kincaid does paint a pretty picture of life in the Caribbean. Old School was great! I can't wait to hear Tobias Wolff speak.

I read all three also and I thought Old School was by far the best. I like novels about old prep schools (such as A Separate Peace) so that for me was the clear-cut winner. M Butterfly was very interesting and thought-provoking (especially because I'm Asian) but I had the plot ruined because I read the back cover, so it was kind of a let-down. Annie John was just plain boring. I expected something huge to happen at the end, like a major tragedy or plot twist, but I was sadly disappointed.

how long did it take you guys to read all these books???

well Old School was the recommended reading for me. got it a few days ago so i'll probably read it somewhere in the near future. i'm not really a "reader", especially if i don't HAVE to read a book. but i'll take your guys' word on it and read it since it looks like it is a good book.

They're short and easy reads. I read Old School in three sittings (5-6 hours?); as for Annie John, I don't know because it was hard picking it up after starting, it's just so boring...

I've started M. Butterfly and, from what I've read so far, it's brilliant.
