Do most people do the reading (lets say for chem 6A) before the lecture of that given topic? Does Johnson expect you to have read the chapter before attending the lecture? And I would assume homework should always come after the lecture, right? I do realize that everything is "up to you" (as it is college now) but I was just wondering what the general consensus or majority of reading/studying habits were for students at UCSD. (maybe its just the first week but many of my suitemates have already done the reading and the homework even before the first lecture- academically)

well for brydges..i think she told us that we should done the reading b4 discussion..iono how johnson is doin it..

Most teachers recommend that you do the reading of the topic discussed in lecture before the lecture actually takes place. This is definitely not "necessary" by any means, and it may not always help you learn the material better - in some circumstances, it may be more helpful to hear the professor talk about the subject, then read about in the book after lecture. For chemistry in particular, I think I skimmed the chapters before lecture, but I did not read the book really carefully because it was just hard for me to really understand what I was reading - it was much easier for me to listen to the lecture first and then read the part of the book pertaining to that lecture.

I've never done it, mostly because I've never had the time (nor motivation). Some professors also choose to deviate from the textbook's content. Since their lectures should be the primary thing on which to focus for the exams, I preferred going to lecture and then using the textbook to back up what was presented in class. This is good practice for upper-division classes, as teachers generally stray from the textbook (if there even is one) in lieu of presenting their own topics of interest.

It's certainly not discouraged, by any means ... I just didn't see much point in my doing so.

I read in advance. Unfortunately that means i'm in a never ending "catch-up" mode. As it stands, I'm a chapter behind the lecture in Bio, but I'm on track with o-chem.
