Realistic?

I have just finished my first semester at the University of Arizona with a 4.0. I was wandering if I kept up the good work next semester will I be competitive for Fall 2010? I know that the adcom will only see my first semester grades and my mid-term report for my Spring semester grades. I think I will do well next semester too because I'm working on my gen eds. My high school record would not be considered competitive for first year admission, it is listed on a few of my older threads if anyone is interested.

I believe I have matured dramatically since high school and I care about what I am doing now. My LORs, ECs and Personal Statement will be solid and hopefully compelling for the adcom. I am an Arizona resident, so the odds will undoubtedly be stacked against me.

Is admission in for Fall 2010 realistic?

Of course it is! W&M looks beyond the numbers. So if they see that you are passionate and that you really have been dedicated and have changed a great deal form high school - and you convey that passion and sincerity anywhere in your app, I think you will get in  GOOD LUCK! Hopefully, I’ll see you next fall

Try to make sure that you have a good variety of courses (some math, some science, some social science, some English, etc.) and try to ensure that the courses you take are a level more advanced than what you took in high school. This will help you be more competitive.

Remember, that because you’ll only have one completed semester of college, W&M will look more closely at your high school record so if there’s anything in that that needs explaining, make sure to explain it.

Also, make sure you address W&M’s personal statement for transfers which is why you wish to transfer to W&M. Having a 4.0 your first semester is a great start. Visit W&M’s transfer web page too for additional assistance.

Thanks everyone for their responses

@ W&M Admission- I am taking “a good variety of courses.” But the question I have is in regards to “courses you take are a level more advanced than what you took in high school,” I took alot of APs in high school so I am no completly sure how a U of A gen ed class stacks up against a high school AP class. How will that be judged?

Also, what type of thing would I need to explain in the personal statement? I have never been severly depressed and I do not have dyslexia just immaturity. Would it suffice to talk about that in my statement?

If anyone else has suggestions or personal experience, do not hesitate to help.
Thanks

I am extremely impressed that W&M Admission reads and replies here at CC. Kudos.

I hope my D is offered a place and accepts!

When we say courses more advanced then what you took in high school we mean don’t move backwards or laterally. For example, if you took Spanish 4 in high school do not take the first and second intermediate levels of Spanish in college. Or if you took AP Calculus in high school, do not take calculus in college. Just make sure you’re moving upwards in your course progression.

As for a personal statement, we hope you’ll address why you wish to transfer to W&M. You are welcome to use that opportunity to also explain your education path and any hiccups you’ve experienced.

Hope this is helpful. Sorry it’s been a few weeks.
