Really important question about ACTIVITES/AWARDS

Okay.. So here's my dilemma

Common app allows you to post 10 Activites and 5 Awards..

Where do I put the rest?

I have a Resume, but people suggest not to attach that to the additional information section- which leads me to my second question: What DO I put in the Ad. Info?

Thank you.

Additional info is used for things like extra siblings, college classes and grades, reasons for w.e etc...

However, my friend put a small resume in the additional info section. He got in. So, it cant hurt that much.

I'm jw, what are your activities?

Here's a small portion

FIRST Robotics - 3 time National Champions, 06,07,08
Regional Chairman's award for Robotics
National Chemistry Olympiad District Finalist
Nationals Quiz Bowl Participant- Varsity Captain.
Scholar Athlete for Track and Field (Captain)
National Merit Commendation
Attended MIPA Journalism Conference
Nominated for and attended New Century Summer Program for French at Schoolcraft Community college.
(My city's)Youth Assistance Award
Attended University of Michigan’s Summer Science Academy Program
Received Outstanding Mentor Award (Taught Middle School students)
Attended University of Michigan’s Telluride Association Summer Program

Ex- Officio of City's Community Development Board
(City's) Library Youth Advisory Board
French Club President
Computer and Techology club- Vice President
Chess/ Math/ Science Team- secretary

I mean.. I want to include all of them.. not just limit it to 5-10,

Is it just me ? Or does everyone only list ~10 activites, or am i missing something?

So... CAN I attach a resume? (is it not recommended?) how else would they see ALL my activities?

I listed 4 activities. You don't have to list all 10.

Are you applying RD?

...But I have more than 10 that I enjoy and love

Just don't repeat info in the 'additional info' and make sure the "informal" resume is concise.

geckolord, what were the ECs you listed?

Kyle, can you be more specific? So far I just list like this For example:

Awards:

08-09:
AP Scholar
Scholar Athlete Award for Varsity Track and Field

I just list it like that.

I just listed the 5 activities that are most important to me on the common app (not the most prestigious activities/awards, just those that mean a lot to me personally).
My counselor did attach my resume with her recommendation letter though. I don't know if that did me any good. I have a feeling that they might have taken a quick look at it since it came with the secondary report and all.

You don't even need to have formal divisions (i.e. "Awards section," "Activities section," etc.)--just go ahead and list them, making sure to show that they are what they are (e.g. an award).

AP Scholar
Scholar Athlete Award
Key Club member, 2005-06, president 2006-07
Participant in RSI
...

You get the point.

i got in EA

my activities were music and community service type things/

Okay.
This is the thing. My counselor is a BRAND new one. I just met her.... I've had her as a counselor for 2 months. She's had minimal experience as a counselor.

She also wrote me a recommendation letter (my school had 3 counselors that just peaced on us over summer break without warning)

The thing is, I don't trust the letter to have sufficiently described my involvement in extracurriculars.

I am heavily leaning towards submitting a full list of my important EC's so my question is : Should I? It will be concise and ~ 2 pages

"To allow us to focus on the highlights of your activities, please complete this section even if you plan to attach a r

If you attach a resume they won't look at it. Point blank. You can call them yourself.

Your better use of your additional info section (what i did) is to describe TASP (thats a big one, but make it like 3 sentences) and any other awards already listed on your application. Also list any college courses you've taken for credit.

Stanford wants you to pick only as many activities/awards as will fit on the common app. Anything more will make you look un-focused and like you're padding your application.

Have you tried using categories? That's what I did.

Like on the common app, have one slot just be "community service" and then in the line you get put your major activities, and in the leadership spot put leadership and awards.

For example, I had section for "politics" which include campaign volunteering, organizing registration drives, mock election help, ect.

btw. Don't list national merit commended or either of you honor societies, they're wastes of space. What's the difference between french club and french honor society? TASP can be considered an award (it's technically a summer scholarship). I would make a category on your app called "languages" or "linguistics" to be fancy lol, and include your language clubs, their leadership positions and that conference you were invited to.

Thanks a bunch..

So it'd be something like...

Select Activity : Foreign Language
Positions Held, Honors Awarded: President, Founder, Vice President
Please list the specific activity here, and provide details if needed: Chinese club- founder, French Club- president, French Honor Society

Hmm?

I would say:

Positions held: Chinese club founder, french club president, french honor society, nominated for New Century French summer program
Details: Organized dah dah dah, led such and such (only the major things)

but either would work

Haha Ok, that sounds way better than what I said.

Do you go to stanford? I sent you a PM on advice

Thanks for all your help!

Ugh. the spaces are so little.

Is SSP + Gains in the Education of Math & Science (GEMS) decent?

you know what i did for the additional info? i put continuations of my why stanford essay and my common app activity essay. i just didnt feel i had enough space with the 150 word limit and the 1800 character limit. i thought they'd hate me for doign this but i got accepted EA.

^I suppose that might be a good use, but once again, I STRONGLY advise against risking part of your essay in that spot.
