Really Low Scores On SAT Practice Tests

I'm in 9th Grade.

I have been on Sparknotes, Proprofs.com and other sites.

I scored really low on some SAT practice tests. The best I've done is 54% of the questions right and 8% omitted. I don't know if this is good for my grade level or not, but I feel so dumb.

Well, I guess those practice questions are done. So how do I improve my scores?

First off, you’re in 9th grade so don’t expect too much of yourself at this point. You’re not going to be at your best on the SAT for a couple of years yet, so don’t interpret your scores as meaning much of anything now. You’re getting discouraged because you’re taking a test that isn’t meant for 9th grade level!

Two, everyone on this site is going to tell you that the only reliable practice tests are those from the College Board, and they’re right! But, please don’t rush out and start doing a bunch of those tests now. They are the best preparation materials available to you, and you don’t want to burn through them too soon.

The things you should be doing now are reading everything you can get your hands on (newspapers are great), and maybe getting a start on some vocabulary prep. Otherwise, hold off for at least another year if you can. Come back to us when you’re really ready to start prepping!

Don’t even worry about it , I did awful 9th grade when I took the PSAT (lower then avg on english and writing i believe) and I’m predicting I have a 2000+ now. Just study hard in school and pay attention and wait till at the very earliest halfway into 10th grade.

I automatically stopped reading when you said 9th grade.

Scarcely anyone in the 9th grade does well. As doubtful as it may seem, you actually do learn a lot sophomore and junior year. And the SAT isn’t all about knowing the material. There’s a certain way to read the test and therefore beat it. But you need to be older to understand it. Try again in 2-3 years.

keep taking practice tests!

Hey Hey!

I remember I got a 1440 on the SAT sevent grade (from that Johns Hopkins Talent thingy). I just went along, did a few practice tests with the blue book, and now as a Senior, I have a 2240.
