Hello all!
So, i wanted to get some of your opinion with regards to my situation. The college I am currently attending is pretty good college. I have nothing against it. The people and professors are very kind and nurturing for the most part. The issue i have with it is that I don't feel challenged the way i should be. The sciences, for example, barely demand any attention. I study an hour at the most before an exam and usually do very well. And im doing the pre-med program!
The subjects I am weak in, like english and social science, are challenging in the manner that i don't like to do the work, but i still have to. Perhaps english is a bad example, because it is the one subject i am actually quite challenged in and have learned a lot from. But philosophy and social sciences are mere regurgitations of the lectures (though my professors would beg to differ).
Sure i spend a lot of time doing homework, but it is mostly opinion papers about readings and such.
Could it just be happening in the freshman classes? Do things get more difficult later on? Or should i just stay where i am so that i could maintain my high GPA so i could get into my grad school of choice?

don't mean to prod, but where are you now?

no worries. Fordham U.

Not being challenged is a good reason for transfer. OTOH, it could be that if you seek out different classes and/or, as you say, get beyond freshman year, it might change.

Could you sit in on some upper division courses to get an idea?

well, there is no real rush, because if I do decide to transfer, it will be for the spring semester of next year. So I'll definitely get a taste of some of the upper level courses. But that is an excellent idea nonetheless, Andale.
In fact, might still do it.

and if you are wondering which schools i would apply to they are:
Columbia (extreme reach, i know)
Tufts
NYU
UConn
basically the Universities that i would want to go to Dental school to.

you are premed and talking about classes like social science? No offense but you should be embracing those classes as being extra easy for your transcript helper. I seriously doubt you are going to get by in your science courses such as o-chem and biochem if you keep up by studying an hour before a test. I find it to be a bad reason to transfer, if you are happy there is no reason to leave.

Also, if I read you correctly in post #5, you are thinking of transferring in to a new school for spring term. A lot of schools don't have spring transfer, so be sure to check the viability of that plan.

Good luck whichever way you decide.

burgler, i guess my biggest complaint are the sciences. They are extremely easy, and that is not taking in consideration the ridiculous curves we get on tests.
And the reason i'm concerned about the social sciences is that i am planning on minoring in economics, if not, double majoring in it.

and to clarify w. my happiness issue. Sure it's a great school, but i feel that i could do better in a more challenging setting. It's the lack of studiousness on campus that bugs me. Everyone goes out and parties all night, fail their tests, and then act all surprised. Then they do it all over again. There is little of that "I gotta be the best" attitude.

hmmm, well personally, if you plan to go to med school you would be surprised how happy you will be when your good grades pay off. You really don't need to know that much once you are in med school, I think a lot of med school applicants would be more than willing to know a little less for better grades. What I'd do is just go above and beyond what is taught at your current school, because its probably already sufficient for the MCAT. Med schols don't really care what undergrad you went to, what they care about is your GPA. That alone will probably get you into a med school. I think it puts you in a tough situation, because i understand how you feel about the people around you. If you really don't like the people around you I guess you could transfer, I think you'll be happy either way.. but if med school is your goal then i'd stick with the easier grading. Go to www.studentdoctor.net they will help you along the way with your schooling also and give you some insight. I am a dental school applicant in the next year or two and have done a lot of research around these subjects so if you ever need any more help along the way feel free to give me a pm.

wow, thanks burgler.

and good luck on ur dental school apps!! I wonder how tough the competition will be for dental schools when i apply

you are looking to go to dental school too??? If you ever need anything or have any questions about it never hesitate to ask!! Ive done more research on it than I should have.. I decided when I was a senior in high school :D
