Reasonable amount of time to spend on homework?

I have to admit that I tend to go overboard on my homework at times. As a self-proclaimed perfectionist, I strive to do my schoolwork accurately and thoroughly.

However, whenever major projects and assignments arise, I find myself experiencing trouble. I only receive a couple hours of sleep, and the next day, I feel extremely tired and unable to focus.

So, how much time do you spend on homework each night, generally? Do you have any pointers on how I can manage my time better?

I plan to take several AP courses next year, and I need to fix my habit now so I am not constantly pulling all-nighters.

Any input will greatly be appreciated.

I usually spend around 2 hours, give or take, per night on homework. This time I set aside specifically for homework; I don’t stop working on said homework until I am finished. Pointers? Don’t let distractions get to you or you’ll be up all night. Set a time at which you will start working on homework. Don’t procrastinate. Don’t over think; most questions are fairly straight-forward.

I’m not sure if this is good advice, but I always start my homework at 9:30. I do my homework and go directly to sleep afterwards. When I get home from school, I often take a nap (a few hours or so). Most people would do their homework when they get home from school and go to bed earlier, but I find it easier to concentrate after a nap (followed by a little awake time doing regular things, like eating). That’s what works for me. I also listen to music while working, although some people find this very annoying. See what works for you. Good luck!

The only homework I ever have is for Calculus (although that will probably change this semester since I have different classes) and sometimes Spanish
Calculus can take anywhere from 1-3 hours a day, but I make sure I understand every little detail and do every problem my teacher assigns. Spanish took 15 minutes max and I never studied for AP Psych or chem.
Although, I procrastinated a lot, and I have a club tues through thurs from 5-7 so I usually didn’t get to homework until 9 or 10.

I guess advice would be to start your homework as early as you can and if you’re too tired to do it right after school, go to sleep or something so at least you won’t be wasting your time and do your homework when you wake up.

I start my homework right when I get home in order to get to bed earlier. I’m an early bird though, so it’s easier for me than it is for you night owls.

As for time, I spend anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour on math alone, plus 1/2 hour to an hour of AP World, plus 1/2 hour ish for anything else. so 1.5-2.5 hour on a school night. Weekends are much more because that’s when I do my real work. 2-4 (more frequently four with distractions) hours for an AP World outline, 1 hour for reading and notes for English, same hour for math. So like 6, normally.

Make sure you’re doing everything a little bit at a time. I tend to do a extra on the weekends when I extra time so I’m ahead. If you have, say, 10 chapters for English due next Tuesday, read a few each night and review Shmoop or Sparknotes the night before to refresh your memory or if you didn’t understand (not to cheat).

Also, I do little things like chem worksheets in the morning. If something won’t take long, don’t loose those 20 minutes of sleep if you can do it in the morning or study hall.
Good luck!

Thanks, Kitten23! I guess part of my problem is that there are too many distractions inside my house; it never seems to be quiet. Perhaps I should try studying at the public library from now on.

Also, it is not just my homework, since I also spend a significant part of my day studying for upcoming quizzes and tests. I feel like I am just an overall “slow” person. This is why I am curious to see how long others spend on daily schoolwork, and how they budget their time despite all the extracurricular activities.

@loltired and louie412 - I am grateful for your input. Yes, sleep is always important since we can never seem to be productive without it!

I take college classes full time. Homework is assigned way before it’s due, so I have lots of time to plan stuff out. I procrastinate on everything, but I probably spend an average of an hour a day on homework. I put all of my assignment due dates on Google Calendar, which helps me prioritize.

My assignments are pretty much all math problems/proofs and philosophy essays, both of which require a lot of drafting and reflecting and thinking about how to word things. It’s weird, but sometimes I like to just sit and think about my homework for a while right after it’s assigned instead of working on it right away, so I can come up with ideas for how to approach the questions. I can work a lot faster when I have a plan.

With assigned readings, I always read out loud to myself so I won’t zone out.
