per month? My school doesn't have a meal plan so i can spend as much as i want. I can buy meals from places on campus/off campus or I can cook (which i don't really like to do). How much should I place my monthly food budget at?

where will you be and will you have easy access to grocery stores?

Right in the middle of campus and surrounded by many restaurants

I’m sorry: what part of the country?
Urban, rural, suburban?
Do you have transportation?

How do you like to eat? A bowl of spaghetti and half a loaf of bread will cost you at most $2 to prepare in a basic dorm kitchen. A salad with a variety of fresh lettuces, lots of interesting vegetables, a salmon steak, and fresh fruit for dessert can cost you $8 to make yourself, lots more in a restaurant.

Oh lol
Wisconsin and yes through the bus

AHHH, Wisconsin has several on campus meal plans for dorms and non-dorm students.

Jenny1penny, there is also a decent grocery store very close to campus (small, but good selection) but if you’re in the dorms I’d do the Wiscard thing and get a meal plan and eat in the cafeterias. None of the dorms’ kitchen facilities are really great to depend on every day.

The University of Wisconsin definitely has meal plans, so I would get one of those unless you will have access to a full kitchen (complete with pots/pans, knives, spices, etc). Eating at a restaurant every day for every meal is just not financially tenable, nor is it healthy. If you do have access to a full kitchen and a grocery store, I think usually somewhere between $40-80 per week is reasonable to spend on groceries, depending on where you live in the country (food prices are up everywhere, but standard of living is higher in some places than others) and what kind of food you’ll be buying. If you have special dietary restrictions, you’ll likely spend more. Ditto if you want to eat mostly organic food or expensive proteins (though you can get a lot of reasonably priced organic food these days).

The OP said she was going to school in Wisconsin, but did not say which school. The assumption that she is going to one of the UW campuses may be correct, but we don’t know.

I’ve seen her on the UW board. I know she’ll be in a dorm. Most of the dorms don’t have any kitchen facilities other than one per dorm, some have one per floor but they get very gross. Just put some money on a Wiscard and you’re good to go.

thanks, RoxSox.

Sorry by restaurants I meant cafeteria as well as other restaurants. I didnt purchase a meal plan so I am just gonna be throwing money onto my wiscard account and spending that. My parents are going to give me 500 for the year for food and I will provide the rest. So I was wondering what average monthly costs for food are so I can see how much money I should plan on putting aside for food
