Reasonable colleges for my stats?

University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign (UIUC) LAS <–TOP CHOICE
Virginia Tech
U of Michigan
Boston University
UT Austin
Pennsylvania State University
University of Pittsburg

I’m not going for engineering even tho I’m applying to some tech schools.

I am currently a junior in a competitive school in Virginia (saying this because my GPA is very deflated). I’d really like to get into an instate school, but I’m thinking about out of state too.

Current Cumulative GPA (up till sophomore year)
WEIGHTED (5.0 scale) : 3.945
UNWEIGHTED (4.0 scale): 3.54

SAT (2400): haven’t taken yet but I’m anticipating above 2200
PSAT (2015): 1510/1520 (760 english, 750 math)
SAT II Math II: 770
SAT II Biology: 740
AP Calculus AB: 5
AP Biology: 3

Current APs: APUSH, AP Calculus BC, AP Macro/Micro, AP Chemistry
Senior Classes: AP Gov, AP Psych, AP Statistics, Geosystems, AP English Lang,

Extra Curricular:

  1. 2 summers in Internship at Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP), where I did my own research and helped out with my mentor’s as well. This was before my junior year and I am planning and coming back this summer as well.
  2. 2 years of Amnesty International Historian (junior)
  3. 3 years of Relay for Life
  4. 6 years of Model UN
  5. National Honor Society
  6. 10 years of Indian Classical Dance
  7. 7 years of piano

How much can your family afford? Your OOS public schools will expect you to be full pay. Do you have a safety you would definitely be happy with and can definitely afford? VT might be that. I haven’t checked the Common Data Set.

Don’t send the AP bio but otherwise I think all the schools are within your range-high or low.UIUC as top-good choice! Also, Erin’s Dad, while the ones that this OP lists will probably expect full pay, states with poor systems are often desperate for OOS applicants so they often have a better shot at getting aid (compared to in-state students whose parents have often paid state taxes for over 18 years…ummm check SUNY).

What’s your budget?

VT is definitely one of my top choices, but I really like the culture of UIUC better, especially because its better for a lot more majors. I’d be taking a loan if I would be going out of state but only for the last few semesters @newjerseygirl98 @“Erin’s Dad”

Well, as a student you could only take $7,500 per year at that point. How do you know the time frame you would need loans for?

“I’d be taking a loan if I would be going out of state but only for the last few semesters” If this means taking out loans for say three semesters at an out of state public uni (say $70,000), then attending these OOS unis isn’t a good idea. And as NJG98 says, where would you get the loan?
