Received a Dartmouth brochure today (Jan 21, 2015)?

Hi, I applied to Dartmouth RD on Jan 1, 2015 and strangely received an 8 1/2 x 11 envelope from the admissions office today (Jan 21, 2015) in the mail with a full color 32 page brochure. Seems very strange to me. Interestingly, it was addressed to the nickname (not my first name) used on my common app. This certainly would not have been out of the ordinary prior to the application deadline, but to get it on Jan 21 after I applied. Seems a bit odd. I live in Massachusetts, so it didn’t have far to travel from Hanover. Has anyone else received a Dartmouth brochure so late? If the goal was to solicit applications, it sure seems like a weird way to do it.

Did you ever go to an information session? They require people to register in advance and sign in when they arrive. Perhaps that is where they got your name from.

No, I have never even visited campus.Perhaps the US Postal Service is just really slow. Otherwise it would seem pretty cruel (and totally ineffective) to send out a recruitment brochure long after the application deadline. I can’t imagine I’m the only one to get one. Really hoping that this is some type of indicator of interest. Very bizarre.

it would also be an odd indication of interest for two reasons: 1) It came so soon after application deadline, and it’s pretty early for them to have read over enough applications to call yours out as a top applicant and 2) this interest wouldn’t come in an anonymous brochure, it’ll be a likely letter to your name

I agree with your assessment Tank07, but it seems like a pretty huge resource waste for sure if that is the case. Sending out these to applicants after the fact can’t have been cheap.

perhaps it was sent earlier and got stuck/lost in the mail for a time? They did extend their deadline so perhaps it was a last ditch mailing in December.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a statement of interest. I received the same thing around this time last year and never even applied. They probably received your information from CollegeBoard as they did mine–I had sent my scores to Dartmouth earlier but that was my only correspondence with them.

I agree that it’s a bit odd since it’s well past the RD deadline, and likely letters aren’t issued until February. I’m guessing that it’s a “thanks for applying” sort of thing on their end, though.

Best of luck!

I guess one of the questions is how would they know your nickiname? Since it is not on your common app, I don’t think it was related to the application. The school probably purchased a list from somewhere.
