Has anyone else received a letter/application packet from Dartmouth that says something along the lines of:

December 23 2008
We contacted you earlier to encourage your interest in Dartmouth. We hope that your appreciation of Dartmouth has grown. Perhaps you haven't had the opportunity to follow up with our admisssions office. Given the mailing delays that can occur this year, we are willing to extend your application deadline until January 21st.

What does this mean, really?

I have never contacted Dartmouth, I didn't know much about the college before the letter, and wasn't planning on applying.

I got one too. I'd be interested to know how many other people got it too, to know how interested they are in me. It seems unlikely that they would send such a big packet and book saying they are extending the deadline to a LOT of people, but maybe that is exactly what they are doing.

This could be a sign that the reg decision apps are down and they are working to recruit .... ??? Everything I read here suggestions this trend.

Swarthmore did this for potential URM applicants last year (or the year before...can't recall precisely). Since their acceptance rate is something like 15% it wasn't because of declining apps. It was aimed at a targeted group.

You probably checked 'yes' when you took the PSATs or the SATs to allowing colleges to contact you. All of the ivies purchase mailing lists for everyone who got above X on their exam. (Some speculate that they are probably able to set X to be higher/lower for certain demographics)

haha i got one too...and my stats are NO WHERE within the range for dartmouth, so i decided there's no point in even applyin..but the letter did seem flattering and it would be a total dream for me to go there...but ya i have no chance :(
