Received a Letter from Georgetown's President

A few days ago, I received a piece of mail from Georgetown University. I had been accepted EA into SFS back in December, so I had been receiving various pieces of mail from Georgetown for some time now. The letter started off like any other form letter, so I read the first few lines and put it aside on my desk

Today, I decided to actually read the letter. I realized that it wasn't a form letter that they sent to every student who was accepted Early Action.

I had submitted a music resume along with my application (but no music supplement CD because Georgetown only wanted CD's from prospective music majors). The letter specifically said, "the committee was particularly impressed with your musical talents," and then it went on to describe the various music groups/ensembles/opportunities available at Georgetown.

Also, the letter was not from the admissions office, it was specifically from the President, John DeGioia. And it ended with this sentence: "the Georgetown community looks forward to welcoming you next fall."

Did other students who were accepted EA that had mentioned music on their application receive something similar? Did other students who were accepted EA that excelled in activities other than music receive a letter that corresponded to their activity?

I'm curious as to see if my letter is a unique case or if several others have received something similar to the letter I received.

I was admitted EA as well but have not received that letter. I didn’t send in a music resume, but I might have mentioned some of my accomplishments briefly in the EC section of the application, and we definitely discussed these in my interview. What do you play and what are some of your accomplishments? Most of my musical accomplishments are at the state level, although I did make the All-American Marching Band (trumpet) – but that is not entirely based on musical ability.

EDIT: Actually… I just remembered a letter I received a while ago that did sound extremely formulaic until it got to about the third or fourth paragraph, which was about one of my essays. And it did go on to mention that Georgetown has an excellent program in such-and-such… which happened to be the reason I applied in the first place.

Yea I think everyone got these. They were “personalized” to one of your extracurriculars or such a thing, and suggested a Georgetown program that was similar. Mine was about student government. It was a little formulaic, but it was still a nice touch.

I got a letter about my commitment to field hockey as well. It was very nice…

This is a wonderful welcome from a very classy university. There are other colleges & universities that also send out personalized notes welcoming EA/ED students. I think it is a genuine, warm & kind gesture that fosters a bond between the student & the school.

i did the same thing as OP! i thought that it was just another letter that they send out to all ea accepted students haha. my letter was about dance, since that’s what i wrote my extracurricular elaboration essay on.
such a nice gesture… =]

@ iheartmiles: I wrote about dance too, so we probably got the exact same letter!

After I read through this thread I decided to reread my letter since I had merely skimmed it before. Mine mentioned my involvement in summer academic programs. That’s pretty cool how they personalized it, definitely a nice touch.

Its nice to hear that Gtown is doing something like this. Especially since their rejection/deferral/acceptance letters are usually quite dry and business-like (although that seems to be the case with many here as well).

some of my friends who applied (and got in) EA at other schools got letters like this. have you all already confirmed you are going to Georgetown and sent in your deposit? if not, these letters could also have something to do with trying to ensure that you choose Georgetown in the end.

i wrote about community service and got a letter related to that…if only i could afford GU :frowning: but such a classy school i must say

I already sent my deposit, but I got a letter!

I got this letter too. It was for my MUN involvement. I’m just wondering if all EA admits get this letter (something about which part of your application the committee was most impressed with) or is this selective? >.<

I received one too, as well as an email from the interim dean of SFS! I’d imagine they are pretty standard for all EA admits, not selective.
