Received Email for UCSD Medical Scholars Program--Questions

How important are medical field relevant ECs? I have none...

Should I apply even though I'm not sure medicine is right for me? I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my life, but medicine is something that I am definitely looking into. This program seems to be catered to those who are absolutely sure they want to be doctors...

I have lived in San Diego my entire life and want to experience life away from home. I have applied to many top 25 private schools and have to stats to potentially get into a few of them. The popular thought tends to be that those who can get into these elite/selective colleges will have no problems getting into good Medical Schools if that is what they truly want. This makes me want to forgo this opportunity because I know that if I figure out in the future that medicine is for me then I will not stop until I get what I want.

Thoughts?

Sorry, no answers to that, as I’m applying to UCSD this year too. I’m not pre-med, so I’m not gonna participate in this, but I as well was invited.
My one question is: does this mean we’re accepted to UCSD?

@thebugbug

I’ve looked it up from several past years and no one seems to have a definite answer. Yet in the program requirements (one of the PDFs linked to in the email) it says:

"All high school seniors admitted to UCSD as freshman undergraduates, and who meet the
preliminary eligibility requirements of the Medical Scholars Program, are invited to apply.
Declared undergraduate major is not considered a factor. "

Yeah, I saw that, too. But when I emailed the admissions office, they said it’s separate and doesn’t mean we got admitted :(

They just send the email to everyone who meets the requirements, but if you meet them, I think you already have a pretty good chance of getting accepted.

I got the invitation too, and I’m considering it. They only accept 12 students max per year though. ): It’s understandable, I suppose, considering some people turn down Ivy League acceptances for this program.

My son applied to Ucsd for bio-medical engineering and also got the email to apply to this medical scholars program - is the program also applicable for bio-med engg?

The program should be applicable for any major as you can be pre-med with any major.

However, if you still haven’t started the application, the deadline to fill in recommendation letter writer information already passed. ):

We played safe and made sure sections 1 and 2 were filled before the deadline.

When are the other parts of the application due? Does it say somewhere on the website that I missed? I know it’s soon, but a specific date would be very helpful.

Everything else is due March 12th, I believe.
