Not sure how to read this: One of the universities my son applied to sent us a letter about financial aid, but have not received an acceptance letter. Any thoughts?

I know there are two schools my S applied to a few years ago that sent financial aid info, but did not send acceptances, he had to log-in to see acceptance.

Sometimes universities send letters asking for additional info for financial aid. That does NOT mean that your kid has been accepted by the university!!! Now, if it’s a letter with an actual financial aid package, different story… ;)

Our daughter received a scholarship award last year before she received acceptance. The acceptance came a few weeks later at a ceremony for the scholarship. We were pretty sure by that point that she would be accepted although there were others in the group who were very pleasantly surprised. The meeting started out with - “We are pleased to announce that you have all been accepted.” Much cheering and crying in the audience followed.

What school was this - very exciting way to find out!!

Please don’t assume anything. My daughter had one school that sent her a WONDERFUL financial aid package-- and ended up denying her admission.

Three years ago,S2 got a couple of letters saying he was “the kind of student our honors college is looking for” and “please consider the honors college” type stuff a month before he received the acceptance letter.

One of DS’s acceptances was actually lost in the mail! He had mostly rejections and was afraid to call the school in question–luckily, he did. So, if you think you should have an acceptance by now, call the admissions office!

Is this too obvious of a thought? Why don’t colleges let us know if our child has been accepted before we have to provdie additional financial information? We completed the FASFA the CCS and now Northwestern wants a huge amount of other documents. Since it is totally a needs based financial aid package (and all calculations say we will not get a penny) - I am feeling like I don’t even want to put the effort into it, since our daughter got a wonderful scholarship from another school. So looking forward to April 1st!!
