recent column about Liberal Arts Honors

LAH director Larry Carver recently sent a link to this column to all parents of LAH students. (He invited us to sit in on LAH "model class" History at Play on Saturday morning of Family Weekend. I'm sure that would be fun.)

The column mentions that 985 students applied to be in the LAH program for this fall and that there are currently 120 freshmen in the program. I'm sure the acceptance rate is not that low - I'm sure some of those accepted did not come to UT or did not join LAH - but I thought it was good to know for a frame of reference that 985 students applied. In Fall 2008 when my daughter started, she was one of 130 freshmen in the program, so the freshman LAH group is a little smaller this year.

Here is the link:
The Liberal Arts Honors Program (LAH) is about to turn 20.

omg…thats like a 10% acceptance rate:( i though lah honors was the easiest to get into

Cocoa the 985 number isn’t just freshman, that’s the total pool of applicants. There are about 500 in the program, 120 of which are freshman, so that’s more like a 50% acceptance rate.

oh…that makes more sense!

No, it’s more like:

1000 apply to LAH. Half are accepted (500).
Of those 500, half choose to come to UT (250).
Of those 250, half choose to do LAH over some other honors program or over no honors program (125).

Those are just numbers I made up, but that’s how it would work. The 985 is including freshman applicants, not upperclassmen.

Yes, the 985 includes freshman applicants, but they aren’t the only ones who can apply. Read the article, it doesn’t say 985 freshman applicants and only 120 participate, it says 985 applicants, 500 participate (not just accepted), 120 of which are freshman. It also mentions the students are taking both lower and upper division courses, and LAH freshman and sophomores, per the program, only take lower division. I suppose I’m arguing semantics, but if the article was only referring to Freshman, I’m pretty sure they would have said that specifically.

I guess the best way to really find out your chances, Cocoa, is to contact the LAH department, since the information we have could be misleading. :)

okay guys thanks! im hoping the acceptance rate is around 50% ^^ that would be great lol

So by saying that freshman are not the only ones who can apply, does that mean transfer students can apply to be in the program? And is there a year limit to who can apply?

Radio - as an upperclassman you can, and technically you don’t even apply for that. See the following page for more details:

Now that Plan II is closed to transfers and likely will remain that way, the only honors available to us will be college and/or department specific.

You definitely don’t need to be in the freshman program to receive honors.
