My daughter was notified today that she was accepted into Liberal Arts Freshman Honors. Does anyone know how many students are accepted into this honors program?

Hey there IDmom06: I was told around 135 last year. This year, I think it's around 150...at least that's what I was told back in November. They had 300 MORE applications this year than they did last year!

congrats. My d just got her rejection letter. I do not know what the problem was. She is top 3% of her class. newspaper co editor. president and treasurer of certain clubs do you thinf=k it is worth a n appeal? Not even on the waitlist. Atleast Rice waitlisted her!!

Hi Priti - I'm not sure how they select. My d's rank is not her strength, but she is NMF and scored a 5 on her English Lang AP. She writes very well, but I assume your d does as well given her editorship of the school newspaper. Maybe it's awards? My d won first at state and third at nat'ls at Nat'l History Day, along with some other stuff. But I can only speculate....we actually didn't expect her to be admitted since there seems to be so much emphasis on rank here in Texas.

I think berly may know more about this...perhaps she will weigh in if she gets back to this thread. Personally, I think I would contact the program to at least ask why, if not appeal, the decision.

The good news is it's only freshman honors, and after freshman year, everyone is eligible for departmental and upperclassman honors. In one short year, this honor program probably won't matter.

Letter arrived today. M. won't be home until after 6 to open it so won't know until then what the decision is. But from the looks of the thread above, I bet he gets rejected. Sounds like they're relying heavily on SATs and not giving much weight to class rank, ec's, leadership, and awards. Whatever. We'll know in a couple of hours and I'll post then. If he does not get in, I will definitely be calling their office tomorrow to find out why!!!

And I forgot to mention above...they did tell me point blank last October that they place a lot of weight on SAT scores...

i hope they dont rely heavily on SAT's. i got a perfect score, and still got rejected. top 1% of my class too. =(

iamthewalrus160...did you get your letter today? Maybe it's "eenie meenie miney mo" !!! Sounds like that's how they made decisions then!!! lol. Was there a pink or orange card inside with the letter?

I'm stressed!!! gettin' on the treadmill!!!!!!

hmm no there was no card? and yeah i got it today and it has ruined my day. it was definitely the worst rejection letter i've gotten. "it might be comforting to know that you were among the best students in the competition" *** does that mean?

My son got in, also top 3% and was NMF, All-State Band. He was rejected from Rice and some other top schools, waitlisted at WashU.

You knoe it is real sad, my D was NMF, ranked 15, SAT 2230 4 in her AP and a decent SAT do not remember the score. I really do not know what to do. So frustrating!!
I mean not even on the waitlist? I wonder if when you sent it in makes a difference, mine was on the last day!! Also IDMOM06 did you list on NMF that UT was first choice? Just wondering, we didnt and just curious if that made them mad!!

My son listed "undecided" for school choice for National Merit. We mailed the UT choice to NM just this week. It seems like many of the admit/reject decisions for the top schools as well as these honors programs are not very consistent.

Priti -

I don't think it could be the NM designation thing. My d has UNC-Chapel Hill listed as her first choice. She is going back and forth between UT and UNC right now. She rec'd an invitation into the UNC honors program before she heard about UT Honors. But she is very torn between the two schools. And I'm not faxing another change in that first choice designation until she makes her mind up once and for all! (She has changed it once already.)

Do you think they placed a lot of emphasis on essays? Also, I do know the state level NHD competition is sponsored by TSHA/UT...could that have made a difference for my d's application? I know her team made a big impression with the UT judges. The judges' notes had 'best senior performance in 15 years of judging' and they got an award from the State Board of Education.... but that was more than 2 years ago and I don't know how they would connect that with her application now. Re: timing...she submitted her honors app and her essays pretty late on 1/30. (I remember because it was my birthday.)

Again, in one year, this will all be moot. There are so many honors programs for upperclassmen to choose from in COLA.

M. was waitlisted. Needless to say, he wasn't thrilled or impressed...just weary and frustrated with this whole process. So the waiting continues, but it's looking like the road is leading to that other university!!!

M's mom!! I'm weary and frustrated with you and your son. Knowing him personally, my d and I both know that the honors program would be privileged to have him. I don't understand this process either...there isn't a finer candidate out there than berly's son.

I contacted the office, and they said there were 75 people on the waiting list. This seems like a lot for a 150 person program, does anyone know if waitlisted people are likely to get in?

I got rejected today, even though I was accepted to Rice. I had forgotten about it completely, so I was like whatev. I thought I had withdrawn my app, but I guess not.

well, there's one spot that'll open up. Anyone else out there declining???

Not really... she got rejected
