I graduated from sdsu last may with a BS in Accounting.

I should have done this earlier but if any of you are still on the fence about what schools and/or want some questions answered about sdsu, I will do my best.

I came as a jc transfer kinesiology major. After a year, I switched to pre-business. Then after taking the pre-major classes, I chose accounting over the others.

So i can do my best to answer you questions about anything from majors to school atmosphere, etc.

Congrats on your recent graduation! I am a business admin transfer and applied as a finance concentration but thinking about changing it to accounting. How is the accounting program there and the quality of the education? How is your job outlook looking upon graduation? Thanks

What is making you want to change it to accounting?

Both programs are great. SDSU is a great academic school. What makes them great aside from the standards they place on their students, is the connections they have to the real world and the alumn who come back and help students.

Accounting is very rigorous. But very worth it. The business program is very respectable and challenging and that’s how you want it. They do their best to prepare you and also help you find an internship or career path. Join clubs so that you can network. SDSU puts on job fairs a few times a semester and I strongly recommend that regardless of your major.

The quality of education at sdsu is amazing. it is hands down the top CSU and leaps and bounds beyond #2. The business depart is highly reputable. The great thing about san diego is that it has an abundance amount of corporate headquarters, companies, private firms, public firms…etc and the business department works together with them so that their students will have all the opportunities to succeed and land that ideal job.

So you’ve never heard of Cal Poly SLO? The above statement seems to be how most would describe Cal Poly.

How substantial was the curve in Accounting322?

the curve varies on the performance of the class. 322 was much easier than 321. They purposely through too much material at you. It weeds people out. So there usually always a curve but it varies. Sometimes they are small and sometimes they are quite big.

Hi
I am a high school senior from San Bernardino CA and I am planning on attending SDSU for Fall 2012. I plan to major in Accounting with a minor in business managment.
So how is their accounting program? Is it a good major to make a career out of? How is the job market in San Diego? Is it expensive to live over their because I dont think I’ll live all four years in SDSU.
Also, how many years did it take you to graduate? I’ve heard that the average SDSU graduation rate is 6 years. So is it possible to graduate in 4 years like I plan to?
Feedback would be great thanks :)

I do not believe can minor within the same department. So If you are majoring in accounting, I don’t think you can minor in management. You would have to go outside of the department.

As for the accounting program, It is amazing. Very challenging but yet very rewarding. They put together a great program over there. And an accounting degree itself is a very valuable degree. Arguably the best business undergrad degree to have.

I was a jc transfer and came in with a different major. So It’s tough to say. But you definitely can finish in 4 years. Even three if you wanted.

Well you are going to want to live near sdsu all 4 years. There are a bunch of new complexes on the west side of campus. Some are owned by sdsu and some aren’t. But they arent dorms. So when you do move out of the dorms, its best to live over there rather than the beach area. And it’s very inexpensive around campus than it is anywhere else in san diego.

hmmm well that sucks, Ill have to check that out about the minor thing.

So how is the job market in San Diego from what u have expierenced lately?
What meal plan would u recommend at SDSU? One that gives the best plan for the least price.

What about the CPA? Have u taken it yet? Is it worth it because I dont know a lot about it.

I am getting a fincancial aid award whereas my net cost to attend SDSU with room and board would be about 7600. Plus I am also getting work study to cover for my personals.
So what do u think about my Financial aid? Are the school scholarships competitive?

The job market is amazing in san diego. San Diego is a big corporate city. Where if you were a person pursuing music or entertainment, LA would be the place to be. But with engineering, finance, accounting, management, etc…San Diego is a great place for that. And on top of that, a lot of those people are sdsu alumns and even the ones that aren’t, still hire a lot of sdsu grads. The business department does a great job on putting together job fairs, clubs and tons of networking events so that its students can land that big job by the time they graduate. You have to look beyond the school itself sometimes. What makes SDSU a great school beyond itself, is the fact that its in a great city.

During my first year at sdsu I did the flex 7 meal plan. It was something like $18 a day that I could use just about anywhere on campus. So theres a lot of freedom with that.

The CPA is something I am planning getting within the year or so. You shouldnt worry about that right now. That is way far away for you. And it’s normal that you dont know nothing about it right now lol every incoming freshman accounting student doesn’t know much about it. And depending on which kind of accounting you want to go into, the CPA is very important. But not something you have to get immediately after graduation.

Scholarships are easier than you think. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to apply to a bunch. You have a better chance at getting them than if you weren’t to apply lol.

I was thinking of switching to accounting because I heard from family and friends that job outlook is better in that field. Finance is a little tougher to land that job for you upon graduation. Accounting is also more flexible. You can use it to land a variety of different jobs. I guess you can say that I’ve decided to go with the safer concentration.

That is correct cpxdamon. Accounting graduates very well can land finance jobs, management jobs and many others besides accounting. But as for the job itself, its job outlook has always been good and has actually benefited from the economy.

Thanks for answering my questions.

And as for my net cost, what do u think of 7600 a year? Is it worth or should I look at my other options?

I dont think you should look at the financials that deep. College is going to be expensive regardless where you go. And it’s worth the investment. Plus apply for scholarships.

Thanks for the input.
One concern I still have is that many people claim that SDSU is very overcrowded with students and that it might be difficult to get the classes you need and that it will be very difficult to have good contact with the professors? From your experience, is this true?

That’s not true at all. Yes there are approx 30,000 students there. But it doesn’t feel like that at all. And I never had a problem getting classes. There are some CSU’s who over enroll but SDSU doesn’t. They are very strict on this. They received about 70,000 applications this year and they only accepted something like 5,000 applications.

So to answer your question, No, It is not anywhere near over crowded, neither do you get the feeling. And it isn’t hard to get classes at all, especially once you get into your major.

Do you have any advice about which major to live with in the dorms? They have you choose your living based upon major. Im majoring in interior design and so in that case I guess i would want to choose to live with the art majors. But im worried those people might be a little strange as i have been apart of the theater, and art classes before and have found quite a few people involved in the arts to be a little odd. Would you suggest living with say buissness majors? I have to put my request for my 1st-6th choice so i doubt my preference will matter much anyway, but i just wanted a second opinion

That is odd Jess. Never heard of that. Are you living in the LLC? If you aren’t, I don’t think you have to pick what major you want your roommate to be nor have to live with someone with the same major.

I applied and got admitted as a Criminal Justice major in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts, but I don’t want to do that at all. Is it easy to switch majors AND switch to a different ‘college’ of study?

Yes it’s very easy. I did it when I transferred.

What are you thinking about changing it to?
