Recent SDSU Grad here

Okay, so following up even further: Today I went to pick up the form for declaring a new major. Filled it out & took it to the department of my desired major (I switched from Social Science to English, btw.) No questions asked. The department chair just filled in and signed what she needed to. I turned in the form to the registrar’s office, and it’s already updated in webportal. Very easy process.

how’s engineering at sdsu?

SDSU has a great engineering program. I know several people who have graduated from there and they all went of to some amazing opportunities.

Hey SDSUAlumn, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. Mine is kind of vague… I’m an admitted transfer student but I haven’t declared my intent to enroll with SDSU because I was waiting on replies from other universities. I think my chances for getting decent housing are slim. How hard is it to find an affordable apartment/whatever within a reasonable distance and a reasonable price? Also, does the late intent to enroll submission give me bad chances at getting classes for the fall too?

apartments around sdsu are very affordable and very nice. So I dont know why you think your chances are slim of getting a decent place.

Like I explained in this thread already, there are around 8 “off campus” apartments practically right on campus…a shorter walk to class than the dorms. They are all really nice and pretty cheap in terms of price and most of them are brand new.

these are new ones

http://www.thegranadaonhardy.com/

there is also Aztec Corner, Piedra Del sol. Two other apartments next door to piedra but idk the names of them. There is also steerling callwodd and apartments right above chipotle right on campus on campanile and hardy. There is also a brand new one right on campanille and lindo paseo

Thanks for the reply and the link! I’m just worried because I know that many students have already completed their SIR and housing applications, and that I’m at the back of the line most likely. At my CC space is limited so if you get behind registering even for just a couple days you may not get all the classes you need. Hopefully that isn’t the case at SDSU.

These places have nothing to do with sdsu or their housing department. These are independent apartment complexes practically on campus and only open to sdsu students. What you are talking about are the dorms. thats something completely different and ya its too late for those. But these apartments are better and closer to classes and much cheaper.

SDSUAlumn - thank you for your advice here. I’m wondering if my daughter will need a bicycle on campus? It sounds like the transportation options are good for getting off campus. But do most kids use a bike for getting to classes?

You don’t need a bike on campus. It’s too much of a hassle. You can get from one end of campus to the other end pretty quickly on feet. If she is living like a mile from campus then ya its prob smart riding a bike to campus but then just locking it up and walking around campus to your classes. Plus, the cops hate bikers and skateboarders. They give out so many tickets, or even just pull them aside and chew them out for no reason.

But if she is living at the dorms or any of the apartments nearby, you dont need a bike at all.

How easy is it to get to the beach in San Diego if im a freshman at sdsu without a car?? and during your freshman year did you go to the beach alot? also what fun things on campus or around campus did you get involved with that you would recomend checking out?

The closest beach is about 10 miles away. But the nicer beach where most of the college crowd goes is about 15 miles away. There is the trolley system which is amazing but it doesnt take you anywhere close to the beach. Its mostly for getting around throughout mission valley.

There are an endless amount of things to do around campus. And many clubs or events to get involved in. I never joined any clubs, but i should have. There is the sorority and fraternity life. It seems like most freshman girls rush a sorority. Especially if you live in the dorms and are around that a lot. That is a great way to get involved and make friends. There are also clubs for your major or certain interests which is a great way to network.

Basketball games are amazing, so I definitely suggest you to go to those. And the football games are just a short trolley ride to the stadium.

SDSU Alumn, on the contrary, I’ve recently been reading some reviews on SDSU and came upon a couple that claimed that as far as the social scene/networking, there’s not much that goes on at SDSU except for the sororities/fraternities. They even went so far as to say that sdsu is a “commuter school.” Perhaps they are just unreliable accounts posted by freshman?

SDSU is not a commuter school. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Every college has students who grew up locally, so they live at home and go to school there. It’s usually those people that call the school a commuter school. Those are the people that don’t get involved with the school and dont see it as anything more than just a commuter school.

If sdsu is a commuter school, then you can call every school in this country a commuter school.

hey, how is the computer science program there?
Also, what do you think about taking a minor, how much longer does it take?

I don’t know much about the CS major. Thats something you would have to do research on and see where they rank. But all in all, sdsu is a great school for academics and atmosphere.

With minors, you will probably add on an extra year. Or rather a full load every semester. Depends which way you want to go through with it.

Is ACCTG 421 harder or easier than ACCTG 322?

kim, 321 was by far the hardest. 322 was difficult but not nearly as bad as 321 and then 421 was the most interesting and easiest of them all. It was a fun class. Its still managerial/cost and auditing, right?

Yes, Acctg 421 is still the same subjects. My daughter is taking it in the fall. She really struggled with 321 and 322 and the Business Advisor said she should consider changing her major. But she only has Acctg 421 and 3 other classes left to take, so she wants to stick it out with accounting. I was just worried that if it were more difficult, she would regret sticking with accounting…

I don’t know much about the computer science program, but my friend is a computer engineer and he is doing an internship at qualcolm this summer. Overall the sciences and engineering programs at sdsu are great.

So when did you graduate from SDSU May 2011? December 2011?
How long did it take you to find a job, and did you have more than one offer?
Any placements at the Big Four from your class?
Were most people that graduated in Accounting able to find work?
Did you receive any offers to work throughout other places in the state like SF Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange county, or was it mostly in San Diego?
