My aunt and uncle live in Virgina and they kept telling that I would really like William and Mary. So they took me to go visit it a short time ago and I fell in love. I am especially attracted to their ancient civilizations major. I'm not too familiar with admissions so can you guys chance me? I'm only a junior so there's some missing scores.

I am looking to major in ancient civilizations and either psychology or sociology. Want to go on to law.

Looks like you're on the right track. Admissios is *very * difficult for out of state females, so keeping your grades up, and getting as high as you possibly can on your standardized tests is pretty important. You'll probably want to score at least a 2100 on your SATs. Just keep it up!

Alright, thanks. Does it help that I come from an almost poverty line income family? Or do they not take that into account when looking at apps?

your extra-currics are great but you need to raise your ACT/SAT and get better grades.
i applied this yr and got denied. 1340SAT 32ACT...4.5 weighted...and i have pretty good extra currics and a great essay/teacher recs.
william and mary was my dream school...i am crushed.

My opinion, Jrs. need to take the SAT's in the spring, if only to have a reference point where they need to work to greatly increase their scores early senior year. It appears your standardized tests scores could be the huge factor. You mention near poverty level. Is financial aid going to be in your decision if accepted? Gateway W&M unfortunately is only for instate students. UVA has a similar program but all students are eligible.

I agree that it would be a significant plus factor to raise the standardized test results. However, even for an OOS female, I think your GPA will be fine, particularly considering your rigorous academic schedule. My oldest d was admitted OOS to W & M as a Monroe Scholar in 2001 with a comparable GPA - in fact, it might even have been a bit lower.

Most elite schools today are looking for students from diverse economic backgrounds, so that should help. But W & M's financial aid is not strong for OOS students.

chrissy17, have you thought about transferring? I'd say that's a definite possibility if you do well your first year in college.

I won't need financial aid for the most part. I am poverty line, but my aunts and uncles aren't. They will help me out. It's more the test scores I'm worried about. Do they take into account my lower GPA since I am always really sick? Should I have my counselor or something send a reason why I missed so much school and why my grades suffered?

If you have a medical condition that results in many absences, I think it would help for the GC to explain. Of course, adcoms at any school are looking for students who will succeed in college, so the explanation should stress how you've been able to manage despite this drawback (because of your commitment, study habits, responsibility, etc.). If you allude to this in your app, I suggest that you spin it as positively as possible, and avoid saying anything like "My GPA would have been so much higher if I'd been feeling better."

May I also ask why you consider an unweighted 3.89 "lower"? Yes, it's lower than a 4.0, but not every W & M student posts a perfect GPA. In our hs, a 3.89 after 3 years would work out to about 12 As and 3 or 4 A-minuses. I don't think this would keep you out of W & M unless your hs is known for exceptional grade inflation.
