I’m giving my husband a recliner for his birthday in about two weeks. I’m not familiar with any brands aside from La Z Boy. I’ve been looking and am kind of appalled at the price of recliners these days. Anyone have any recommendations for a nice one under $1000?
Bought an Amish Dutch made recliner which was around $1200 a few years ago. I just looked them up and they are $1800 now. Wow, prices are going up like the cars.
Well….if you want to up your cost to $2000…West Elm makes an electric recliner that honestly does not look like a recliner. It’s the leather one.
This is nice too!

We bought my husband a leather recliner a few years ago at Macy’s. They had a lot of choices at all different price points plus they often have pretty good sales. This is the specific one we bought, which is currently just under $1000:

FWIW, my H is very picky about how his chairs feel and fit his back and legs, and I would never buy him a recliner without him testing it out first. The recliner he has now I talked him into, and he doesn’t love it as much as the old leather one it replaced. I regret not letting him get what the one he really wanted, since he spends so much time in it!
Yes, he knows I’m getting it for him and would like to test them if possible.
That is a nice looking recliner, but sadly Macy’s doesn’t deliver to our area in SW Virginia.
I really like that style!
What style are you looking for? Asking because people’s preferences differ. That Macy’s recliner will feel out of place in my house. We are Scan Design folks… we have a Stressless.
(Dang autocorrect!)
Bingo! Here is one that looks exactly like a Stressless but at 1/3 of its current price!

(I paid $1300 for our Stressless in 2011, but the prices almost doubled since then!)
Ohlalala! Costco even has the real deal. $2000:
not anymore! Out of stock when I clicked link…
I’m not sure on the style. I’m not crazy about the big puffy recliners, but not really attracted to some of the modern minimalist styles either. But, My husband has inherited bad posture, and I want him to be comfortable so comfort and support are the priority.
We don’t have a large living area so that’s a factor.
I really like the recliner that Thumper linked from west elm. I’m finding it hard to find a fabric on the lower end of the price range though.
Do check Costco! They seem to have a ton of recliners with excellent reviews.
Bummer! That was a good deal.
From the sound of it, you wouldn’t like the one we just got. It’s not super puffy, but it’s definitely not minimalist either. And it’s fabric. Both H and I hate the feel of leather. But this one is for a person 6’4" and up to 500 pounds. It’s ginormous! I’m 5’10 and my feet don’t touch the floor. We’ve dubbed it The Throne. I love cozy recliners. That’s where I nap and spend almost all of my time.
It was also “on sale” from $1500 to $850 and we talked them down to $650 because it was discontinued and they only had the floor model.
Try looking at Pottery Barn. My daughter just got one that looks like the one that @thumper1 linked for about $1500. The electric is available for more $, but they went with the manual, but it is also a rocker and swivels! I can’t link it from the device I am on, but a Google search will bring it up. I spend a LOT of time in it daily taking care of my new grandson, and will say it is the most comfortable recliner I have ever sat in.
Before buying anything from West Elm or Pottery Barn, please investigate their customer service.
I have a Flexsteel manual recliner. It’s really hard to push down the recliner, it might break in but we don’t use it much and when they do, people have a tough time getting out of it.
I looked at and almost bought this recliner. It’s still first on my list. I understand it’s a regional store but hopefully Southern Motion can be found in other parts of the country.
We have a recliner that my ankles hang off of, no good (but it was a hand-me-down so the price was right). You really do have to test them out, especially if you want your whole leg supported.
Making sure you are just looking for recliner and not rocker/recliner.
I have a hate affair with rocker/recliners - I think they nearly all are hugely unattractive. But H MUST have one. Rocking is a comfort to him. His rocker/recliner broke in fall 2020 in the midst of the pandemic when we had been almost 100% avoiding brick and mortar stores. We went to LazyBoy and luckily the one I found LEAST unattractive he liked and there happened to be one in a warehouse 2 hours away. Pure luck. It chimed in at right around $1000.
If it’s going to get heavy use and/or if the occupant is not a small person quality is a must or you will be replacing before you know it. We were not interested in motorized bells and whistles but did want leather - otherwise a cloth one would have been in the $799-$899 range.
Again that was ROCKER/RECLINER.
