I noticed that a lot of people, when they talk about schools (within Engineering), they always bring up the same ones: Either the upper tier (Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Caltech, etc) or the ones close to it (Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, and even Purdue). And yet, no one ever talks about UMTC. The times I've brought it up I always get strange looks. Is there any particular reason for this? Does this imply that those schools receive more opportunities regarding internships, job placement, higher salary, etc., or what?

When I tell them that's it's fourth in Chem. E. (my major) they are all surprised, never having heard of it. Granted, I know teenagers aren't exactly reliable regarding job placement, but it's still something that caught my attention. Is UMTC's rather stellar ranking for Chem. E. really all 'puff' and no weight? Just by looking at the curriculum, I think it'd be hard to say that, but, to erase doubt, I ask you current or past students: What are your thoughts?

From what I’ve heard and read, the chemical engineering ranking is definitely legit. Absolutely. The rest of UMTC’s engineering departments aren’t bad, they’re just not as good as the ChemE department. And that’s why you won’t hear about UMTC in the top engineering schools discussion. They WOULD come up in a top ChemE schools discussion, if the people you’re talking to know what they’re talking about.

Long story short, I just got rejected from like a ton of small private schools today, so I drove up to the U of MN, the one place I got into (honors :)) to cry on my old brother’s shoulder. He told me a story about a kid who got rejected from IT honors at the U of MN but went to MIT instead. Kind of not related to your post, but a crazy story…

When people discuss the “top” schools in a certain field, they are often referring to rankings published by things like US News
…and college rankings are like hot dogs, if you saw how they were made you wouldn’t get near them

The college rankings aren’t something you should base your college choice on exclusively (for example, don’t go to the #5 school for chemE if the #4 school is much cheaper and a better fit for you), but they give you a good idea of what schools are good at what.

And UMTC’s chemE program is always top 5 and is very prestigious. It’s the real deal.
