Recommendation Clarification?

Just looking for a bit of clarification concerning recommendations. (Obviously).

I've always assumed that there really wasn't much riding on the recommendations, since you obviously wouldn't ask for a recommendation from a person who doesn't like you as it is. However, what I've heard people say (here and in "real life") seems to suggest that a really good recommendation can go a long way. Anyone want to clarify just how important these things are (if at all)?

Great recommendations can definitely contribute to a postive image of an applicant, while overly hyperbolic recommendations or simply bad ones might cause your standing to diminish slightly. Anyone else?

how many different teachers should you ask?

two teachers

i need six recs so im thinking about asking three to do two each

oh, I thought you meant for Yale. lol I asked three different teachers for all of my recs.

do you give them envelopes to mail themselves or do they give it back to you to mail yourself?

More polite to give them envelopes.

do i do a follow up... to make sure they mailed them?

yes and yes. and write thank you letters afterwards! :)

how do i go about doing the follow up...w/o being rude?

is it weird if i ask a teacher who i haven't talked to in about three months?

There's only one way to find out...
