Recommendation Error

I know I'm posting in the parent's forums, but I just wanted to get some insight from the parents since many of their children have been through the admissions process before. Thank you in advance for you help. (:

Today, I discovered that my guidance counselor made two errors in my letter of recommendation. She stated that I took two AP classes outside of school. I've taken courses, but they were merely non-credit college classes. Secondly, she said that I intend to major in Political Science, but I told colleges that I intend to major in Sociology/Economics. I have already applied to all of my schools.

How should I approach this issue? Is it a problem at all?

Thanks again!

Well my son didn’t recieve a copy of his GC recommendation so I’m not sure how detailed it was. However they are probably just going to think the GC is confused.

so they won’t assume I took the two courses (i didn’t include them in my common app) and chose not to report the scores because I failed?

I wouldn’t be TOO concerned if I were you. Honestly, I don’t know why they put any stock at all in a GC’s LOR. Most GCs don’t know the kids, and only base the content of the LOR on the transcript and brag sheet, and have no personal, first hand information to contribute.

oh okay thank you!!

Chlory, I don’t think they will think that - but if you are really concerned, you can always go talk to the GC about it.

Wait… Umm what do you mean you failed? on your applications you are usually asked if you have taken ANY college classes. Is there a record of them out there? Colleges can look and find out if you have taken any college classes. Not sure what it’s called but they can.

i listed them on the common app, but they were non-credit so i never got grades. i just took them because the courses interested me.

i am just anxious because im not sure of the adcoms will assumed that i failed the two courses i took because i didnt list them under the AP classes sections (guidance misinterpreted “non-credit college course” as “AP course” said i took two additional APs)

You’re worried they will think you failed the courses? You are way overthinking this.

ok that’s reassuring. thanks!

Please let your guidance counselor know that a mistake has been made. A college admissions counselor might call your guidance counselor for clarification, and it would be important for her/him to know that they were non-credit, not AP. I don’t think the major will matter, but you do want the guidance counselor to have the correct information for any future communication. Good luck to you!
