Hi all,

I know that we as parents are not supposed to read letters of recommendations.......but thank God, I did (read on for details)!!

My S is applying for a scholarship that requires all info be sent by my S in one envelope to the Scholarship Search Committee. So, in October, my S asked his teachers and GC for their letters of recommendation, and we just filed everything away until he could complete the application this week.

As I was assembling the paperwork, I realized that one form needed to be stapled to the app, so I opened the sealed envelope from the GC. The GC's letter of recommendation was also in the envelope, so I read it (I know, my bad) and was flabbergasted to see that half of the letter was about another student (including his 3.3 GPA) and half of the letter was about my S's ECs.

I have to admit; I went into a mini panic attack. Was this just a fluke or did all his colleges receive this funny letter (they were sent out two months ago)?

I contacted the GC and she apologized profusely. She is in the process of contacting all his colleges to make sure that they received the correct letter.

Anyway, I am just SO thankful that the mistake was caught in time. But I wonder, what if the wrong letter had been sent to all my S's colleges and I had never opened that sealed envelope..... Do colleges contact GCs regarding these type of mistakes? Or are they so busy that they judge the applicant on the rest of his application (and the GC letter isn't really a deciding factor anyway)?
