i'm just completing a research internship right now, and i would like my professor to write me a recommendation. however, i'm a little confused as to how it all works. do i just ask him to write a letter and have him mail it to all my schools or is there a certain form he has to fill out? haha i'm totally lost so if anyone can tell me exactly how additional recommendations work, i'd really appreciate it!

The typical HS teacher rec forms attached to college apps are somewhat standardized. They have an open body for comments but also include a survey with questions such as:" How does student compare to others you've known in your career?" "How does student perform in X in your class in comparison to others you've known in your career?"

As you can see, these are aimed for the HS teacher and in the HS context.

It'll be up to you to use the professor as one of your "teacher" recs or just as a supplement to your other teacher recs.

If you want him to just be a supplemental, then you should provide him with envelopes addressed to the schools you're applying to. Insert a note clearly saying that this rec is for you and include your ID info.

Otherwise, supply him with the forms from the colleges themselves. HTH and GL

Do you know where you're applying? If so, I highly recommend contacting each one and asking about this. First, ask if they take supplemental recs. Second, ask what format it needs to be in. Some schools won't even read supplemental recs, and some schools won't read recs that aren't on their own recommendation forms.

If you get the okay to send supplemental recs, inform him in writing of which schools need their own forms filled out and which can take just a letter. Then, let him know the target date by which you hope to have completed your application. This date should be at least two weeks before any school deadline or before the time when you absolutely want your recommendation in. Then, you can have him send the rec straight to each school. If he prefers to send the recs to you and then have you mail them to the schools, the recs need to be signed, sealed, and signed over the seal to prove that you did not open them. :)
