Hey peeps!

For the recommendation letters, I am getting one from my HL Art and one from my HL History teachers. But I'm not sure if IB HL Art is considered an academic subject. It is a very demanding course, though. I am planning to major in Art History, so I choose these two teachers. But I'm still not sure. Any advice?

does the teacher know you? does s/he think highly of your work, intellect, potential? has s/he written good LORs in the past?

Majoring in Art History and getting a rec from your Art and History teachers. Sounds good, doesn’t it!

I’d say using an art teacher for your 2nd recommendation is somewhat risky, and I wouldn’t take the chance. It would be safer to find another recommender in another discipline. My son took IB HL Art so I know it’s an intellectually demanding course, but still I would go with a safer approach in your application. If math/sciences aren’t your strong point, then look at English or Theory of Knowledge.

Having said that, some colleges will consider 3rd, supplemental recommendations. This is especially true of small liberal arts colleges that welcome additional perspectives. If you are submitting an art portfolio (which you should consider doing, even if you intend to major in the art history instead of art studio) then you could include the art teacher’s recommendation as part of your art package.

thank you for the replies~
