I plan on going to college for computer science. I’m trying to increase my chances in every way to getting admitted. Iv self taught myself computer science at a young age and have good knlowesge on the subject, I recently programmed an application myself for a busines that uses it and is happy with it. Do you think getting a recommendation letter from the owner would help in admission ?
Check with each college to which you are applying. Some will take supplements, some won’t. In this particular case, I think it’s better for you to write about the experience than submit another LOR.
I was always under the belief that recommendations are purely about what a teacher observes in the classroom. Being self-taught in computer science is not something you ask for a recommendation for. It has nothing to do with how you were in the classroom. Just write about it.
So it would be more beneficial to write about it in my personal essay than getting a letter of recommendation? I worked with the owner of the company on it and overtime became friends, it wouldnt be like im a complete stranger to him he knows me personally, and what im like as a person. I transferred to an online school for my senior year so I think a letter from the owner would be better than asking a teacher/counselor that knows little about me for one. But if it benefits me more to write about it I will do so.
For college admissions, what you think does not matter. If the college wants teacher recommendations, then it wants teacher recommendations. If the college allows a supplementary rec over and above, then you could do that.
However, first and foremost, it’s your app (meaning the software), so I feel that you should be the one to talk about it.
