Recommendation Letters & Scholarships

I’m assuming that it would be obvious that getting specific recommendation letters for scholarships would be ideal. However, is there anything wrong with reusing the letters you used for applying to colleges to apply for scholarships? Thanks!

@JTLaramore

You would need to know what those letters say. Where I am, LOS are sent confidentially to the colleges. They are usually specific to recommending a student for acceptance to the college. They might say something like “I recommend you consider this student for admission to your niversity.”

Do you really think that is what a scholarship committee wants to read?

If you are doing it without the knowledge and permission of the letter writer, than yes, there is something wrong with it.

They know I’m using it. My question is whether or not scholarship committees mind it?

Well, if I was sitting on a scholarship committee and I read a recommendation letter saying something like “Johnny would be an excellent asset to your university, and I strongly recommend his admission,” I sure wouldn’t give it much (if any) credit.

Do the scholarship committees “mind” it? I doubt it.

Will it look better to have a more specific letter? Probably.
