I'm a junior, starting to think about recommendations as I look at my schedule for next semester. I'm a total humanities student, strong in history and english, and not so much in math and science. I will definitely declare a major in the humanities when I apply to colleges.

The thing is, I have excelled significantly more in my humanties classes, and I go to a small school where teachers and students can have very close relationships, and there are more than two english or history teacher who I feel like will write me great recs.

However, I've tried my best yet faced my limits at the math and sciences courses I've taken, and I don't really have a single teacher yet who I can say really knows me and considers me one of his/her memorable students. I'm counting on the teacher I'll have next semester, who hopefully will click with me and I'll take his course next fall as well, but what if not?

One rec from math/science and one rec from humanities is what the college counselors strongly recommend at my school, but if I'm really certain that I want to take a path in the humanities and make that clear on my application, would getting recs from english/history pass? (my third one would be a theater teacher/director)

You don't have to get a rec from a math/science teacher and one from a humanities teacher. Many counselors do recommend that, but you don't have to if you feel that you would get better recommendations from 2 humanities teachers.

I suck at humanities courses so I got 2 math/science-teacher recs.

upenn specifically prefer recs from teachers who teach the subjects that you want to major in.

but in my case, i got english/history recs even though my major is chemistry, because they were the teachers that knew me best. just find the teachers that will reflect your work in the best light.

Unless they specifically request 1 humanities, 1 math or science, have your recs written by the teachers who will put you in the best light. The topic they teach you is not as important as what they have to say about you as a person.

So IMO, send in two humanities recs if they are the two teachers who like you the best. That is exactly what I did and I was accepted early to my first choice school. Good luck with your application.

Sometimes, if your grades don't already show this, its good to show that you're well rounded in all your classes, meaning you don't just behave extremely well in English class, you also act enthusiastic in math or chemistry, which can show you have a strong motivation to learn, even beyond your main interests. But really, i don't think it matters as long as you pick teachers from junior/senior year. (don't pick teachers from ninth grade). Just pick the two who will write you the best recs!!!
