I know that Common App asks for 2 recs...do they have to be from teachers, or can it be from a professor at another university?

I'm doing Summer Ventures this year and the stats professor I have has a degree from Harvard and Renssesler (or h/e you spell that). Would it be better to get a rec from her than a teacher? She'll be with me for 4 weeks.

Colleges are usually looking from recs from academic teachers who have taught you very recently and know you well. In general, having the recommendation written by a professor at an university shouldn’t pose a problem, but in your case, it probably won’t work because the person hasn’t taught you in a formal, academic course. (Summer Ventures seems like a summer program.) If you really want a letter from her, consider sending it as a supplement in addition to your one/two required ones, and consult your guidance counselor in school.

Also, the undergrad school the teacher went to honestly doesn’t matter much. It’s always better to ask someone who know you very well, and I don’t know how close of a relationship you can build in four weeks.
