So, I just looked on the commonapp for Cornell and tried to invite recommenders. It allows me to invite up to three teachers and three "other" recommenders, whereas other colleges are usually just two teachers and one additional rec. I was planning on initially only sending in two letters of rec from teachers and 1 from other. But, will it be to my advantage to submit three teacher recs and maybe even 2 or 3 other recommendations? Is there a reason they allow you to submit so many?

Do not send extra recs if they don’t shed new light on you. Cornell doesn’t honestly expect anyone to send 6 unique recs. I suppose they just have it as an option since, hey, there are some interesting people out there. Less is more–two very solid recs is all you need

So my plan was to send 1 teacher rec from a 10th grade advanced science teacher. And the second one from an English teacher who I had for both 10th and 11th grade. Would it be any advantage to include one from a language who I have had for the last 3 years including this one? This might help since my science teacher is from 10th grade. Also, for the additional ones, I was planning on just sending one from a research mentor who is a post doc. But, should I also send one from a band teacher who I’ve had for the past three years and have been the section leader in his class? I feel like that might provide insight into my musical ability. Any opinions?

Thank you for replying btw

This is what they say at information sessions:
2 teacher recommendations
1 guidance counselor recommendation
1 from an outside person that can speak about your work ethic or character

More than that is excessive. They say 3-4 is alright. 5 is kind of pushing it, 8 is way too much.

Ok that really clears things up thank you. I’ll go with two teacher recs and an additional research rec.
