UChicago requires two recommendations: one from an English/social studies teacher and another from a math/science teacher. Now, here is my problem: I am not close to any of my math or science teachers at all. The teachers I have gotten to know personally over the past three years fall under the English and social studies category. For some reason, however, the math teachers I've had were more impersonal... As for science, haha, well, I've hated all my science teachers so it wouldn't be a good idea to ask any of them for a recommendation. The only teacher I could possibly think of asking for a rec in the math/science department is a teacher who has already retired. Another possibility is a math teacher I had for only a semester. Clearly my second recommendation is going to be a lot weaker than the one from my English teacher. Am I basically screwed? Or can I compensate for this by providing a supplemental recommendation from my AP US History teacher (or possibly my Japanese teacher of three years)? Or would this make me seem really unbalanced?

Anything to show that you are a good student is a positive thing. I sent in two science teachers and a weaker history. If you're looking to major in an english/non math or science then it just shows where your interests lie.
